SNL‘s Most Important Cast Member, Kristen Wiig, Dances With Mick Jagger In Tear-Inducing Farewell [VIDEO]

Maybe I like Kristen Wiig a little too much. Maybe I care about Saturday Night Live more than a normal person should. But watching legendary cast member Wiig say goodbye to the show last night after seven years made my heart swell up with this kind of sad but oh, this is so good, yay for her, half-cryish feeling. I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about… right?
Of course, the great irony when talking about Wiig leaving SNL is that it’s impossible not to mention Bridesmaids, her breakout hit movie. Bridesmaids, by many accounts, is the “real” reason she’s famous and is her greatest contribution to women and comedy. But this line of thinking obscures her huge accomplishments on SNL, where she was often one of a tiny handful of female leads. During her tenure, a large portion of the SNL skits involving a female character meant Wiig was going to be the lead. In fact, she leaves in her wake just two full-time female cast members, Abby Elliott and Nasim Pedrad — although one would hope the fantastic Vanessa Bayer and Kate McKinnon soon get a chance to move up.
This is all a roundabout way of saying that Wiig kept women going on SNL when the show had an undeniably small female contingent. The show owes her a lot.
Anyway, back to the farewell skit. After slow-dancing with Mick Jagger to “She’s A Rainbow” (because, how else would you want to leave Saturday Night Live?), Wiig hugged and danced with all her cast members. And, all sentimentality aside, it wouldn’t be a true SNL send-off if Andy Sandberg didn’t flail Wiig around and make her almost flash the audience — which is exactly what happened. Oh! And (spoiler alert) Amy Poehler shows up. Happycry.
Watch the whole send-off below.
