In Brief
Lisa Frank’s Darkest Hour
3:30 pm, October 19th | by Sarah Devlin
Lisa Frank has weighed heavily on our minds over the last few days, between sharing her working philosophy and employing a pre-teen Mila Kunis in her commercials. Frank’s aesthetic feels of a piece with the general neon-and-sparkles moment most of us had in the 90s (my third grade class was nearly torn asunder by vicious accusations of Lisa Frank eraser theft. Things got really real that day), and it’s fun to imagine the persona behind creations like this. It must be a lot of fun! Or, if no one wants to buy your wares, as this video clip by Emma Tattenbaum-Fine suggests, extremely dark.
Well, that settles it. I am always, always going to imagine Lisa Frank as a chain-crayon-smoker in a robe dreaming “of dolphins united in an arc of euphoria.”
