The More You Know

Lolo Jones Should Stop Complaining That It’s So Hard To Stay A Virgin

There’s a great line in 40-Year-Old Virgin that sums up how I feel about 29-year-old Olympic star Lolo Jones’s recent admission that she has never slept with anyone and has no intention of changing that until she’s tied down: “Virgin’s not a dirty word.”

The silver medalist, who has been open about her Christian faith and values, told HBO “Real Sports” in a new interview that holding off on sex has been “the hardest thing [she has] ever done in [her] life.” She cited her parents’ broken relationship as one of the reasons for her abstinence, continuing:

“I just don’t believe in [pre-marital sex]. I want to wait until I’m married to have sex. My mom, she was with my dad for twenty years and never got married and they’re not together anymore, so I just want to have that solid bond. It’s just a gift I want to give my husband. But please understand this journey has been hard. There’s virgins out there and I want to let them know that it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics. Harder than graduating from college has been to stay a virgin before marriage. I’ve been tempted, I’ve had plenty of opportunities…”

As Jones joked about possibly making an appearance in a potential 40-Year-Old Virgin-esque sequel, the female HBO reporter laughed so hard she had to wipe her eyes. But there’s nothing funny about Jones’s choice. Some may make fun of or judge her for sticking with her morals, but it’s actually rather admirable for her to open up about her mores. Even so, griping that it’s so unbelievably difficult to hold off on sex takes away from the message she seems to be trying to send, which is that it is perfectly fine to wait until marriage to have intercourse. Quarterback Tim Tebow has spoken of his virginity before but never gone on and on about what a struggle it has been to maintain the stigmatized title. He’s five years younger than Jones, who says being a virgin loses its cuteness factor after a person hits 24, so maybe he’ll begin whining soon as well, but complaints from either person won’t inspire others to stay chaste until their wedding night.

I think people like this author of this BS are the problem picking on this young woman’s decision she has made for her own life.  Our society sees nothing wrong with the likes of Octomom, Kim Kardashian being famous for her sex tape and ranking as a ho in the Fortune magazine list of top money making celebs, MTV’s Teen mom & those girls who have gotten in various trouble with the law.  Let’s not even go there on the daughter of a former Vice President candidate “pimping” her unmarried teenage pregnancy ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK with speaking engagements (yet being a hypocritical bitch on gay marriage). Hey author where the hell is your OUTRAGE on those of the aformentioned subjects?  As much as the author has a bitchfest on a young woman’s realistic aspects of her virginity.  I mean really!!

Im not criticizing her decision at all. I actually think it’s rather admirable, but the amount of complaining she does about maintaining her virginity undermines what she is trying to do. Yeah I am sure she has had a rough time with it, but going on and on about how much it sucks is not going to inspire people to follow her lead or believe this is truly what she wants. Be a virgin until marriage but don’t complain so much abut it

Who says society doesn’t see anything wrong with Kim K., Octomom, or the Teen Mom stars?! These people are made fun of daily so it’s quite a stretch to say society embraces them while shunning Lolo Jones. Laura Donovan never said anything was wrong with being a virgin. It sounds like her gripe is that Lolo has decided to make it seem like waiting for marriage is such a difficult thing, possibly discouraging younger fans to take the same route.

I’ll admit that nowadays when I hear some 30-year-old saying she’s a virgin, my eyes roll a little bit, and not because I haven’t been there. They roll because 10/10 women do it for religious reasons and expect that life will work out differently for them because they’ve become a martyr of sorts. The problem is that when you wait for marriage then find out there’s no halo waiting for you or any of the other unmarried virgins, you feel like you’ve been played. Had someone told you there will never be a pot of gold waiting at the end of the rainbow, you probably would have made the choice to do what’s right for you and not base your choice on religion. But that’s just my opinion.

Twenty years? That’s pretty damn good, even if it ended up not working out.
