Manners Matter, Or Why I Am Over ‘Honey Boo-Boo’
3:30 pm, October 23rd | by Sarah Devlin
Take a look at this video. Regardless of how you feel about Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo, regardless of how you feel about the Thompson family, and regardless of how you feel about Dr. Drew, there are two very basic things at work here that have passed the point of acceptability:
1. If Alana Thompson is just pretending to be asleep, she’s being super rude.
While it’s true that Thompson probably has a busier schedule than most seven-year-olds, I don’t see how that excuses her from learning the basics of how to behave when taking up someone else’s time. June Thompson has very smartly opened trust funds for her daughters so that they can take advantage of other opportunities the show has opened up for them. However. Learning how to be polite company is also an investment in a person’s future. The Thompsons should forfeit the right to continue to promote themselves (which is, after all, what they’re doing in all of these interviews) until that happens. I realize this is unlikely, since these bizarre interviews are great publicity for the interviewers as well, but a girl can dream.
2. If Alana Thompson is actually falling asleep, maybe it’s time to stop doing interviews.
I mean, really.
There you have it! These two possibilities have made it impossible for me to find any redemptive qualities in the Thompson clan or the show — if it’s the first one, then they’re doing their kid a disservice by not correcting her behavior, and if it’s the second it starts to feel like their family/Alana’s childhood is being exploited for material gain, even if that comes with an greater amount of opportunity later on. I have to wonder if it’s worth it.
