We hadn’t even finished watching this clip before we knew we had to share it with you — and post it to the Facebook wall of every single one of our friends — and program it to play ad infinitum on an iPad that we’re going to mount on our bedroom ceiling. If you haven’t already, buy Maria Bamford’s “The Special Special Special.” It’s a Maria Bamford special so of course it’s hilarious, bracingly dark, and absolutely perfect, but it’s also an audacious experiment in minimalism and discomfort that pushes stand-up as a performance art. Instead of renting out a stadium or a club, Bamford performed the entire hour-long set in her own living room, in front of an audience of two: her parents. Below Bamford discusses “The Special Special Special” as well as the stigma of mental illness and what living in LA has done to her moral compass.
