Friday Flashback: Martha Stewart Cooks For 77 Million People In 1987

We enjoy following the current day-to-day lives of the rich and powerful. But sometimes it’s fun to look back and remember how those moguls ended up where they are today. Each Friday, we’ll dig up a vintage video starring your favorite movers and shakers in their younger days.
Today: Martha Stewart’s 1987 Thanksgiving-themed Kmart commercial!
Earlier this week, we wrote about a young “aspiring Martha Stewart.” In the mid 80′s, Stewart herself was an “aspiring Martha Stewart” (though, at 46 years old, she wasn’t quite as young as the aspirant one). Before the TV shows and the major media/lifestyle company, Stewart had been a well-known caterer and had written a big collection of cookbooks. Her big TV break came in 1987, when she became a consultant for Kmart (helping them sell “beautiful things” like sheets, as she told David Letterman).
This here is one of Stewart’s first TV commercials for Kmart, in 1987. As for those 77 million people she mentions, that’s how many people reportedly shopped at Kmart each month, at the time. So it’s easy to understand how she got famous fast.
