Tina Fey’s First Project Post-30 Rock: ‘Mean Girls: The Musical’

30 Rock is ending its seven year run this Thursday night. We are quite sad we will not get our weekly Liz Lemon fix (except for the reruns of the series playing four times a day on two different channels) but we know that Tina Fey isn’t going anywhere. And the first new project on her agenda is perhaps the most amazing news ever. Mean Girls, the greatest film of our time, is going to be a…..wait for it….MUSICAL!! An actual Broadway musical! Not just one I imagine in my head!

At the SAG Awards on Sunday Tina Fey, the creator and writer of Mean Girlsconfirmed that there are plans to adapt the 2004 film into a musical masterpiece. She told E! ”Maybe! We want to. I would love to.” The 30 Rock star added: “I’m trying to develop it with my husband [Jeff Richmond], who does all the music for 30 Rock and I think Paramount’s onboard.”

The story is classic and would be perfect for the stage: new girl comes to school; has trouble making friends. New girl makes friends with crazy b*tchy elitist girls and learns the art of social mind games. It’s a tale as old as time.

Plus, Mean Girls is already a damn good movie and super popular to boot. Can any of you out there honestly say that you don’t watch at least 10 minutes of it when you catch it on E! once a week? According to The Guardian,  the film has been referenced by everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Barack Obama (and that was just this year). Obama’s official Tumblr features a gif from the film. Even Amanda Seyfried says the film was her “best work” and really, can you argue with that?

Moreover, think of the language Mean Girls injected into our venacular. “Word vomit,” “fetch,” “half-virgin,” “fugly.” Where would slang be without this film?

So what can we expect from this musical adaptation? A song called “Stop Trying To Make ‘Fetch’ Happen”? A breakdance fight between Cady and Regina? A ballad about not being a size 1, 3, or 5 by Regina? More rapping from Kevin Gnapoor and the Mathletes? The possibilities are endless! We will be eagerly counting down the days until this happens.
