High Five To Soccer Player Megan Rapinoe For Coming Out
3:45 pm, July 3rd | by Laura Donovan
The same day CNN’s Anderson Cooper confirmed he’s gay, U.S. women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe announced she’s gay as well.
“I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out,” Rapinoe, who will be competing in the Olympics this year, told Out magazine. “I feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out. People want — they need – to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol’ U.S. of A.”
Though the busy Rapinoe doesn’t have a lot of time for her girlfriend, the athlete indicated that her fellow teammates know about her sexuality:
“In female sports, if you’re gay, most likely your team knows it pretty quickly. It’s very open and widely supported. For males, it’s not that way at all. It’s sad.”
She’s right that guys don’t have it as easy, and that needs to change. Hopefully Cooper’s statement can be viewed as a ray of hope for male athletes who don’t feel comfortable being their full selves in front of fellow players.
