Meghan McCain: “I’ve Seen A Therapist” To Deal With Media Reaction To My Body

It’s been several years since “Dirty Sexy Politics” author Meghan McCain made headlines for posting a revealing Twitter photo of herself in a tank top, but the 27-year-old female still has to deal with the media’s unsolicited remarks about her body.

“Now I’m very sensitive to any pictures taken of myself at photoshoots and whatever because the Internet has this very weird…especially people in politics…this very weird reaction to my body because I’m not super skinny, I have large breasts, I know, they’re real, I can’t do anything about it, and like the Internet just has this really weird reaction to my body…I’ve seen a therapist about it,” McCain told Forbes reporter Meghan Casserly at SXSW over the weekend.

McCain, whose weight and appearance have been criticized by conservative commentators Glenn Beck and Laura Ingraham, to name a few, says a lot of people seem to wonder why she hasn’t slimmed down in the aftermath of taking so many hits for her figure.

“I think people don’t understand why I haven’t lost a bunch of weight right now, because ‘all women in the media should lose a bunch of weight if they want to go on television to talk about anything,’” McCain said. “I don’t really need people in politics or people [who are] a little bit older to understand or like me because there’s enough college students out there that seem to like me and that’s all I really care about.”

Thank God for college students, and cheers to McCain for refusing to get down to an unhealthy weight or undergo plastic surgery in response to cruel critics.

Put it down to envy.  A professor once made a remark in class that i was a disstraction.  I, too, have large breasts and at the time, I was wearing a light weight sweater.  You know, I never wore the sweater again?

  • Anonymous

Meghan Mcain should lose weight, not for beauty reasons (that’s a perk), but for health reasons.  Also, she should start wearing some actual color. She tends to wear a lot of black (which is known for slimming), but if she chose better materials, she would be able to wear color.

She might also want to work on her valley girl speak, being that she graduated from Columbia and all.

  • Guest

…or get down to a healthy weight.

Meghan, a lot of us conservatives support you and we’re glad you’re speaking up and fighting the good fight.  Don’t late these right wingers get to you.  You have a lot of support throughout the country.

like, like, like, like…She’s a Columbia grad???? She went to college???? My word, my condolences to all college grads.

She should see a personal trainer to deal with her body not a therapist.

    It looks like somebody’s jealous.

  • 12voltman1

The professor was the person with the problem. Not you.

  • 12voltman1

Megan looks just fine. Everybody has different body types. If she lost a little weight that would be fine as well. Too me pressure these days to be perfect.(You know. Like me)

I agree, I think Meghan McCain is beautiful. Insulting someone’s looks is a cheap shot. Go after a person’s character, not his/her appearance, which is irrelevant.

Maybe its because i am a breastman but i think Meghan’s sexy.  My problem with her is shes out of her depth as a political annalist.  She is used as a token pet republican on MSNBC.  If she had the conservative core convictions of maybe SE CUP it would be very different and nobody on the right would be criticizing her.  She has to do something to impressive conservatives some time where we say…wow look at what she did in defense of us.  Instead of giving liberals ammunition against conservatives.

lol, meghan mccain should lose weight, but chris christie should keep eating more and more right?

Where was Chris Christie mentioned? Of course, he should lose weight too.

Why is this news?..If it wasn’t for McDaddy, Meghan would be a nobody.  She’s a bubblehead.

WC hates Meghan because in WC is 24/7 Palin.

It’s not McCain’s weight that’s the problem, nor is she the latest in the endless parade of publicity hounds whose life’s blood IS media coverage yet insist it’s to blame (rather than anything they might have done) should some “crisis” like this arise …

No, the fact is that it’s how she chooses to DRESS that’s at fault.

To put it bluntly, her “look” simply SCREAMS ”Bimbo !”

I mean, why would ANYone who REALLY wants to be taken seriously by the media and the viewing audience – and most especially any woman with larger-than-average breasts – not merely AVOID appearing in public or being photographed while wearing tight clothing which only draws attention to the physique ? … (duh) …

(But then … why would ANYone who REALLY wants to be taken seriously as a political commentator – and most especially one whose career might be criticized for nepotism – not first learn how to, like, research, write, and, like,  speak intelligently about, like, politics ‘n stuff before marketing herself as, like, y’know … a political commentator ?)

If Ms. McCain’s therapist has NOT suggested that the responsibility is HERS for over-sexualizing her public image in order to gain attention … ?

    Then I will.

  • http://twitter.com/RabbleRealist Rabble Realist

This moron has yet to do an interview that doesn’t make me sick that she is put out there as some sort of role model for”political youth.”  First of all, she isn’t 19 – enough with constantly talking about how YOUNG she is. And her comeback that others are “boring and forgettable” so she wins? She is the personification of a society that has learned to value sensationalism and hype over substance. BTW the reporter was a total mark – as if there aren’t attractive, intelligent women on tv anywhere? kiss-ass.

  • Anonymous

While I feel for anyone who has to deal with insensitive comments about any part of your body, McCain did not have to use her Daddy’s influence to get a job as a commentator for different news organization and, therefore, put herself in the public eye.

She probably needs to work with her therapist to find out why she allows these comments to affect her so negatively, or why she feels the need to enter the political arena without any apparent qualifications to do so.

  • Anonymous

She appears to be at a perfectly healthy body weight.

    lol – for what?

For posting the pictures of her boobs pressed together and then being “shocked” at people’s reaction?

This girl is a train wreak.  Nobody but the left cares about what she says or why she feels the need to say anything.

lol – this is an attack on Meghan (according to Maddow and McCain:

Gosh – right up there with: c*nt, who*e, ignorant, ugly, despicable, etc.

Therapist is fine. She has a psychological issue. Most women do when their weight is put under a microscope in the media. She needs to feel comfortable in her own skin.

That was not the initial insult Laura lobbed Megan’s way regarding her weight. Please….look it up.

  • Verreauxii

Just jealous people. I think she’s perfectly fine. She just needs to grow a thick skin and not let the cheap shots get to her. She is in politics after all.

  • Tan

I second what Voltman said. For the record; as a fellow chick with big boobs, they’re just jealous! Trust me I know. I used to be about average size weight wise and had very big boobs and loved them. Everyone used to feel free to comment and say even rude things to me because they were flat chested themselves. But don’t let them make you feel bad for it! Be proud of them and ignore the jealous girls and men that wish they were with you. For the past few years I’ve been very slim and believe me the worst thing was my breasts reducing! If I could permanently gain weight to get them back I would! I see super curvy girls and I’m envious. I still have DD’s but they aren’t what they used to be. Be proud, wear clothes that YOU like and never let anyone make you feel self conscious about your beautiful body. Breasts are so beautiful. Ignore The Envy!

  • Tan

Btw that professor is lucky you’re too nice a person to get him into trouble! What a rude unprofessional ‘professor’!

  • Tan

I always agree that having a healthy weight is a very good thing, but I really don’t think Meghan is large enough to warrant an urgent need to lose weight for health imho. She couldn’t be more than just a few kilos over her ideal weight. If she is currently eating healthily and exercising and that is her natural weight she is fine. What I’m saying is she’s within the small range of natural body weight. Some people do the right things and eat healthy food but have a large appetite and therefore are just slightly overweight. If its healthy food you’re enjoying and you’re maintaining your health and keeping an eye that you don’t grow too large it’s not THAT bad. It’s the people that are really big and eating crap with no nutrition and not exercising yet are thin or average or big or huge that need to worry. We don’t know what Meghan eats so you’re being judgemental. Knowing you, you’re just saying this because she is socially liberal like 95% of people heour age.

  • Tan

Btw; the whole ‘black is slimming’ thing? Total myth. Same with horizontal stripes. Black is the heaviest colour to people, it is the cut of clothes that flatter. Panels help too. Horizontal stripes make people look taller not wider, but vertical stripes will do that ( make you seem wider). Trinny and Sussanah. All tested out.

Your post reads like pure envy WC. The article is about mean people like you! She is actually a very attractive girl with beautiful breasts. Most men would pick her over a string bean with a flat chest I think! Men? I’m jealous of her boobs too WC, it’s okay! I have a big chest but not as big as hers and at least I’m woman enough to admit my envy. But please don’t be mean to hide it. Women need to stick together not be nasty to each other and worsen the problem. Young women like us are already

  • Tan

(cont) suffering from poor self esteem over body issues. We disagree on everything WC but can’t we at least agree that shaming other women is a BAD thing for the world?

  • Tan

Can I translate seek for you? ‘establishing that you’re not a conservative’ = you’re not insane therefore are unworthy of inclusion in his twisted version of conservatism.

  • Tan

It’s incredibly rude and uncalled for to tell someone to stop talking just because they fail to share the extent of insane far right wing views. If someone identifies themselves as conservative then they are. He obviously identifies himself that way and like a lot of conservatives don’t have extreme views. The takeover of conservatism (or attempt at) by insane far right wing Attila types has so damaged the political dialogue in America and ( hilariously for liberals like me) effectively flushed the hopes of one political party with an honorable history until the 1960′s

  • Paul Spomer

Meghan McCain: the political equivalent of Paris Hilton.

  • Tan

Super cool Voltman. I love men that love women just as they are. I think she looks great myself and would look great in real life. The camera does add a little weight as its making 3D things into 2D. Either way she’s a great looking girl and I would kill to have her boobs like I used to before I lost weight. I think men would find her confidence in herself very attractive. Too many women are self conscious and feel ashamed of their bodies. It’s a horrible thing that a lot of the attacks come from OTHER women that should know better. Women should celebrate their bodies, not feel shame about their own and attack other women for theirs.

  • 12voltman1

    oh please…spare us!

  • 12voltman1

Christie is morbidly obese. Megan is hot!

  • Tan

She can wear whatever she damn well wants! Showing your shape does not automatically mean unprofessional! Women should celebrate their beautiful bodies, not hide them because jealous women *cough* YOU *cough* try to shame them.

  • Tan

ONE poorly thought out Twit pic does not an ‘over sexualising’ make. And I only describe it as poorly thought out because it was a little too much for someone on their professional rather than personal Twitter account.

  • Tan

I don’t think Meghan is any terrific talent, and I understand that she got where she is through her father. But she does act as a good barometer for my generation – Gen Y – and our generally widely agreed on social views. She’s the poster child for what Gen Y thinks about x, y, z. Every person under 30 that I know overwhelmingly share similar, formerly considered non-mainstream, social views. Yes to equal rights for gay people, yes to gay marriage, yes to decriminalisation of pot/legalizing pot/better laws on all drugs, yes to voluntary euthanasia, and much more. As she’s a high profile member of the under 30 set with an interest in politics she is relevant. In her defense; at least she’s working. She doesn’t need to work, being so wealthy she could be a full time
Party girl if she liked. People underestimate what immense change is coming to the world from the new generation of current 18-30 year olds. We aren’t in power yet but soon will be and we are overwhelmingly socially liberal and increasingly more and more agnostic and atheist. In the coming decades Meghan’s views will be a given and implemented as law with ease across the world. The people currently fighting gay rights and for harsh pot laws will be remembered as bigots on the wrong side of history. Religion will increasingly be a private issue only and not be relevant for political discussion or consideration for policy ideas. I am Australian so I could be viewed here as incorrect about the extent of agreement within the generation for an American setting and if so I apologise. But the effect is still there if only a little less so in America than here. In Oz the agreement is startling. I have a right wing sister and she is staunchly for gay marriage, against all organized religion and a super environmentalist worried about climate change (in Australia it’s impossible to ignore the evidence which is before our eyes increasingly every passing year).

  • Anonymous

But then you turn 31, and realize all the bunk you believed in between 18-30 was foolish and you start using your mind……and not your heart………hopefully. Young people are idiots, I should know, I used to be one.

Actually, having worked with a hospital-affiliated community outreach program that aims to help obese teenagers and young adults, I have a pretty good idea of what is a healthy body weight.  There really is no set universal healthy body weight.  A person’s build plays a major factor in what’s a healthy weight for them, and some people, like Meghan, have naturally larger builds.  This fact is one of the primary criticisms of BMI, as it does not take into account individual differences in build and weight distribution.

  • CHuck Feney

Forget the boobs.. Megan is an idiot .
    Whatever!

It’s genetic, because her father just went on air saying we need to stay in Afghanistan so the Taliban don’t cut off opium producion like they did the last time they ran the country, and so than 19 more hijackers operating out of  a cave there under the command of a dialysis patient don’t knock down three more towers… one without even flying a plane into it!
    Whatever!

  • CHuck Feney

He’s going to be his own campaign parade float next Thanksgiving in the Macy’s parade!

  • Tan

Nope. Actually; that people get more conservative as they age is a myth. A recent study confirmed it. It’s just generational differences.

The reason myself and others subscribe to socially liberal views is not our youth. I can only speak for myself here but my views have come from genuine research and reflection. I shall have these views my lifetime and will never turn about and decide suddenly that gay people are my inferiors, that organized religion is a good mix with politics, that harsh drug laws are a good idea. My stance on euthanasia has come from personal experience, both my own and from watching three people I love die slowly in agony, in a strange place surrounded by strangers when visiting hours passed. If someone has a personal choice to not suffer that fate, who am I to stop them? Who the hell do opponents of personal liberty think they ARE!!!?? No one, I repeat NO ONE, has a right to make other peoples decisions for them and take away their freedom if no one is harmed in the process.

Young people are NOT stupid. I suspect you’re a grizzled, envious older person that fails to understand this newfangled new generation that has it so together. News flash old man: my decisions DO NOT come from my heart, but my brain. Only my romantic decisions are heart based. My political and social views are well thought out, logical and moral. I have spent my twenties and teens slowly developing them. It’s highly pleasing to me that the stances that make the most sense are also good and moral and right and are which my heart happily agrees with.

Obviously you have issues that your own questionable views (since you think all young people are stupid I question your reasoning ability and grasp of fact and nuance) are clearly at odds with what your heart cries out for and that concerns me. Clearly you have a lot of personal confusion with your head making decisions that clearly your conscience disagrees with. I’ve never heard a convincing argument against gay marriage and rights, against personal liberty when harmless, against the carefully and thoughtfully controlled legalization of voluntary euthanasia (and please do not respond to that by posting embarrassing lies about ‘don’t kill me’ bracelets and murder of elderly people in the Netherlands. These stories are complete and total laughable fabrications invented by mean so called ‘Christians’ that seek only to impose their own personal religious views onto others that do not share those beliefs and should be free of them in a free country).

  • Tan

Wow. Whats up with the attitude? Remember Breitbart. This conservative anger, this all enveloping OTT, fuming, ranting, foaming at the mouth anger is dangerous! It can kill you! Relax! I think you need to find out why you are so crazily angry and work through it with a professional.

Mediaite did a good piece on McCain a few months back…about how shallow she is and adds nothing to the political convo. She’s only capable of snide juvenile remarks, she doesn’t have the knowledge for informed analysis.

That’s her problem. No one gives a rip about her big boobs or big ass. She brings up her own boobs more than anyone. I guess you do that when you can’t defend your words.

  • http://AverageBro.com AverageBro

A decent looking girl whose vanity and self-centeredness make her just as shallow as the women she so vehemently dislikes.

  • 12voltman1

He’s a bat shit conservative. Probably  due to some sort of chemical unbalance. I don’t think he can help himself.

  • CattyNineTails

    Question for ya, Tan:

Would YOU wear a super-short skirt and a skin-tight, low-cut blouse if you, say … worked in a bank ?  Had to appear in court ?  Were going to some house of worship ?

Probably — or at least hopefully – not.  Why ?  Because wearing a really sexy, revealing outfit in those settings would not be appropriate.

I didn’t say McCain should NEVER wear ANY sexy, revealing outfits, or that women should “hide” rather than ”celebrate their beautiful bodies” …

And OF COURSE she can wear whatever she wants ! … so long as she’s willing to accept the consequences if her public appearance isn’t entirely appropriate for the setting — like her “Twit pic” which YOU describe as being “a little too much for someone on their professional rather than personal Twitter account.”

From what I’ve seen, McCain’s public image is consistently “a little too much” – her wardrobe most often seems chosen specifically to draw attention to her body, especially to her bust.

The consequences ?  Just look at the comments HERE declaring “she’s hott” – a pretty demeaning way to describe a political pundit.

So if McCain really wants to be taken seriously and truly resents comments about her body, suggesting that she consider toning down her wardrobe is hardly the HERESY you make it out to be.

In fact, it’s an example of what used to be known as ”taking responsibility for one’s choices” and while I recognize that’s a pretty old-fashioned concept, it’s still a HELLUVA lot more intelligent, mature, classy and respect-worthy than trying to blame the media … or whining publicly about needing a therapist … OR needing to *cough* up spurious motivations like jealousy or shame for someone you’ve never even met.

Worse than his weight, Christie is also a RAGING hypocrite.

  • Tan

Quite honestly I’m at a loss as to what appearances you think are so outrageous by her. Every time I’ve seen her on tv she’s been dressed quite normally and definitely NOT inappropriately. When and where has she worn a short tight skirt or worn very low cut tops? Because I simply haven’t seen it and I can only assume that even a tiny bit of cleavage is offensive to you. The only time I’ve seen her in something revealing was the twit pic and she wasn’t appearing and opining at that time. How you’ve seen her in a short skirt is simply beyond me since in every appearance I’ve seen only her top half has been visible like everyone like that on tv, with the exception of Fox and their constant ‘leg chairs’ and Gretchen seated to best show off her legs in the morning. So how did you see this skirt?

I’d love to see all these links to her tight, overly sexy, inappropriate dress

  • Anonymous

She’s a perfectly health weight, and has nothing she should or needs to lose.  Anyone who says otherwise is nuts.

Her valley girl speech is very childish and if she’s going to communicate for a living, should change.

  • Tan

Also, I don’t see anything wrong with men pointing out that she’s hot. It’s relevant to the story and if you find that demeaning to women you need to relax a bit. Positive remarks are okay. I’ve said similar about men and that doesn’t mean I think men have nothing to offer but sex appeal! If someone posted a rude disgusting comment about her appearance like ‘fat pig’ or something THAT is offensive, but a man pointing out an attractive woman is not a problem unless he thinks that’s ALL she is, and they hardly said that. I think you need to chill…and seriously I wait eagerly for the multiple links to Meggie McCain’s terribly inappropriate dress in her professional appearances on msnbc and others! Methinks that your sexy/inappropriate/ super tight dress sense = quite fine fairly typical plain conservative dress sense according to most people

  • Bobbo

I see nothing wrong with her size and I’m glad she’s comfortable with herself. I’m a Democrat and don’t agree with everything she says but she is smart and informed and sexy as hell. She has really cute toes, too.

  • 12voltman1

    Me Too !
But I must admit for pleasure.

Actually she has as far as I’ve seen, dressed very much like any other “good Girl” (for lack of a better term) of her age.

  • 12voltman1

Words are all about the intentional way in which they are used. This is were out of context come into the picture as well.

If you find Meghan hot, anything you say should be questioned.

Both need to lose weight. At least Christie has been forthright about his obesity.

  • Anonymous

I also worked for a health care institution. Everyone has an ideal weight range that they should be in. Meghan is not in her range. That is all I’m saying. My mother was also a nurse and she said that the natural build has nothing to do with weight. It’s a myth. Height, metabolism, thyroid, etc. all play a role.

  • Anonymous

If Meghan wants to be the same weight that she currently is, then she should be more careful with what she wears. Any person, whether male or female, deserves to be judged for how they look in their normal appearance. I am just saying that if she doesn’t want to have to deal with the reality of personal attacks via her being in the media, then I would agree with the general public that she could lose some lbs and actually put on some colors that do not include black. Watch her appearances. She always wears black. It makes her look like a vampire and I’m trying to say that in a nice way. I don’t mean that as a personal attack. Women just have to be careful with materials.

It doesn’t look like she uses Spanx so maybe she could do that too.

  • Anonymous

I made a comment that McCain chooses to predominantly wear black during her appearances. Watch her. It’s mostly black. I welcome her to wear color.

Most men I know don’t find her attractive. Liberal men seem to. And my commentary wasn’t about her breasts. You can’t curb the overall nature of those. I was talking about the rest of her. If I can a Conservative friend in the same situation, I would be saying the same thing. I don’t tend to talk about my boobs online, but there is no need for me to be jealous of McCain on this. That is all. :)

  • Anonymous

Ver – You keep promising to not talk to me, yet there you are again.

Palin isn’t a columnist at the DB, last time I checked. Although, the DB did feature a Palin article. Palin’s article read just fine then.

    Go troll the Washington Times.

  • Anonymous

I’m sorry, but unless you have, at the very least, her weight, her height and her waist circumference, you do not have enough evidence to objectively claim that she’s outside of her healthy range.  If you had any experience dealing with obesity, you’d know that.

What your mother said is all well and good, but I’m going to have to go with academic journal articles that report, using empirical evidence, individual body type does play a role in whether or not a certain weight range is healthy.

  • Tan

No spanx in my parts but I know what they are. They’re disgusting and just make women look the same size but oddly stuffed into a sausage casing. And no, people do not deserve to be judged; it’s an unfortunate side effect of public life yes, but not a good thing. It’s always the women getting judged. Why you want to make the world a worse place for female public figures is a fair question. Hardly a day goes by where you don’t hear someone say how conservative women are so sexy. The fact is that the only reason for that is because they’re chosen based on that and less attractive conservative women are relegated to the sidelines and their careers never soar. Cons have women problems. Nasty people make fun of the looks of incredible women like Sotomayor and Kagan, but all it shows is that for moderates and liberals, it’s what’s in the noggin and your qualifications that count, not sex appeal. Yet cons continue to talk about it as if ‘they win

  • Anonymous

I’m going to go with my mother that has actually won awards in the health industry.

We’ll agree to disagree on this issue. No biggie.

  • Anonymous

No – liberal men and liberal women have Conservative women problems. You can both wear makeup and pass legislation while having a family.

Kagan get judged on their policies. Like I will judge Kagan if she doesn’t recuse herself from the health mandate court case because she served as a source for this issue while she was the Solicitor General. These matters count.

And yes, if Meghan is going wear only black, I’m going to comment on it. This is America. I think you are from abroad. You type as if you’re in Canada or abroad. Not enough media in your own country to worry about?

ever see the movie Top Secret?  In the film there was a scene where two guys try to infiltrate east Germany.  They dress up as a Cow and merge with a bunch of other cows in order to pass by the guards.  Since Cows don’t wear boots its usually easy to find the fake cow.
Conservatives behave in a certain way and liberals behave in a certain way too.  When they dont you end up with someone pretending to be a cow wearing a cow costume and also wearing boots  ;)
I’m an al gore liberal  Moooooo

Yes you can wear makeup. I’m no girly girl WC but I look like one and I love looking nice, but that doesn’t mean every woman in public life has to wear makeup and heels and dresses like me! They can do whatever they damn please so long as its a professional look and not taking away from their work – same as any man. But until men have to wear makeup women shouldn’t feel shamed into it by women like you! You read like you hate your own gender WC.

I find it difficult to believe you haven’t heard of ectomorphs, endomorphs and mesomorphs! And then for women there’s three very basic shapes that can affect healthy weight readings; apple, pear and hourglass. Apples are more likely to be over the waist measurement whilst under the body mass for overweight and vice versa the other two basic shapes. Some people are naturally more round in shape (not necessarily size, I reject that obesity can be natural), some more slender and others more muscular. I’m five feet nine and have to actually avoid using heavy weights because without even working out at all I am all muscle, it’s weird! I’m thin but what I do have is lean muscle and people always comment on my arms which look like I work out daily. But guess what I weight so much. People are always shocked when I tell them my weight and comment how small I am. It varies for everyone WC!

If Meghan has a weight problem it’s due to that massive RINO ‘Horn” she displays when She’s on MSNBC pretending to be a Republican…Please resist conflating your overwrought politics with your overweight corpulence…
