Alert! Alert! NYT Shockingly Reports That Banker Bros Wear Funky Bracelets

First it was buns. Then it was socks! Now it’s bracelets! The New York Times expresses its shock today over the fact that bankers (male ones, of course) are wearing bracelets. “Bohemian” ones!

The Times traces the rise in bracelets, or the more masculine-sounding “wrist tangles” to Kanye West’s preference for them. Now, everyone from “rockstars” to “bankers” have hopped on the bracelet bus. From the story:

“To restate the obvious, the look is not about one perfect bracelet. What guys are after is a mix of colors, textures and materials, with a good, classic watch thrown in for good measure. You may want to max out at four or five lest you look more like Madonna ’84 than Kanye ’11. Especially since, unlike most accessories a man can wear, the Kanye bracelet often packs a bit of a punch, bringing a lot of color and personality to a relatively small piece of real estate. But then, a little jolt of transgression is exactly the point.”

In the past few weeks, the Times Style section has seemed to have discovered that men wear hair buns, and also that they wear colorful socks. Also recently, The Today Show tried to coin terms like “mewelry” and “murse.” While it’s admirable that they’re trying to include men in the style conversation, we’re put out off by the suggestion that men’s style is only worth covering when it’s somehow wacky or insane.
