Mila Kunis Has Not Been Listening To Sheryl Sandberg

Mila Kunis isn’t pregnant or married, yet she already announced that she intends to quit acting when she has a family. She told Playboy Magazine, “The truth is I don’t think I can do this for the rest of my life. I also want a life. I want a family, like, one day, not tomorrow,” she told Playboy magazine. “I want to be a present mom. When I was growing up both my mom and dad worked full-time in one location. I’m never in the same place for more than two months. How am I ever going to have a family like that? You have to make compromises.”

Apparently, Mila has never watched a talk by Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook. “Do not leave before you leave. Do not lean back. Lean in. Keep your foot on that gas pedal,” she told Barnard students in 2011. This is Sheryl’s mantra and the focal point of her very soon-to-be-released book titled — you guessed it — Lean In. Now Mila’s career is going very well right now, but her attitude suggests that she’s starting to lean back.

In an interview on The Valley Girl Show Sandberg said, “Women need to start out their careers with the assumption that they are going to stay in.” Even if they do drop out for personal reasons, they shouldn’t go into your career thinking they will. “When you’re in the law firm don’t think ‘I don’t even know if I want to be a partner because I might want kids someday.’ No. Just assume you want to be a partner. Keep your foot on the gas pedal,” said Sheryl. You have to assume you are going to stay in so you can have the option of doing so later on. “We need to get women to start out aiming big and staying in.”

Mila is clearly aiming big in her career right now, but it’s disappointing to hear that she doesn’t believe she can manage a successful career and be a “present” mom simultaneously. We think Sandberg would disagree.

There is nothing wrong with not going full throttle into a career. She has the money to retire and pursue other interests, so why judge?

Why not celebrate that Mila (1) has become a successful actress, despite her having to learn English when she moved here from the Ukraine; (2) appreciates the importance of motherhood as equal to the importance of career, (3) and is making decisions based on her own beliefs and needs, rather than on society’s expectations?
