Miss Utah Sings Her Botched Wage Gap Answer

Poor Miss Utah Marissa Powell; she has been getting some major flack ever since she fumbled her answer at the Miss USA pageant. While we weren’t particularly easy on Powell (in our defense, railing against the wage gap is kind of our thing and in no way is “create education better” a solution or anything more than just a string of English words), we don’t think she deserves the amount of mockery and ridicule that has been directed at her. Powell’s incoherent stream of consciousness if easy to laugh at but it’s not as if a majority of Americans could do any better; it’s hard to think that quickly while under glaring spotlights and standing next to Giuliana Rancic! I’d like to see any ol’ Chad BroChill speak thoughtfully and eloquently about the gender pay gap while on live television. I’d actually pay real American dollar bills cash money to see that.
Despite her gaffe, Miss Utah has really come out on top. During a Today Show interview, she delivered an adequate answer to Matt Lauer’s question on the pay-gap: “So this is not OK. It needs to be equal pay for equal work, and it’s hard enough already to earn a living, and it shouldn’t be harder just because you’re a woman.” Just last night, Powell showcased a charm and self-effacing humor on Jimmy Kimmel that easily won us over. In the clip below, Powell sings her original mess of an answer to the tune of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and wins hearts across America.
So keep smiling and keep shining, Miss Utah, and you will recover from this whole hullabaloo spectacularly. If there’s one thing America loves more than someone they can point and laugh at, it’s a comeback kid.
