Morning Joe Promotes Obnoxious “Working Woman” Stereotype in Parody Video

Okay, I get that most morning cable news teams aren’t exactly known for their gentle touch. And Morning Joe is no exception. But a particularly ham-handed segment they aired this morning left my mouth agape.
First, let’s back up. A faux “promo” for Morning Joe aired this today that played into a few stereotypes about the hosts of the show. The premise was to provide a “funny,” satirical look at how the Morning Joe gang prepares for its daily newscast. Joe Scarborough is seen rising out of bed after being resuscitated with electric paddles one might use to revive a flat-lining critical condition patient (hilarious!). After waking, he puffs on a cigarette, swigs some hard liquor and then proceeds to play craps with a pile of singles on the sidewalk. Charming.
So what’s co-host Mika Brzezinski up to in this fantasy land? Downing shots of Jameson with a biker gang? Nope. She’s seen waking up at the crack of dawn to make school lunches for her kids! And going running (in full makeup), while her cohorts cut loose. They’re the fun ones, after all. She strolls into the office, impeccably dressed and coiffed, and sits down at the news desk, darting disapproving glances at her (hungover? still drunk?) cohorts.
The whole segment reads like a Judd Apatow approach to the working woman. Do I really want to see Brzezinski acting like a boozed up adolescent? No. But I’d rather not see her treated like the Morning Joe’s RA, either.
Can I get an amen? Oh, thanks, Business Insider:
[The spot] manages to sum up quite succinctly the increasingly hard to watch dynamic of Morning Joe, in which Joe and company behave like bad little boys and sexy Mika scolds them.
No, I don’t want to stumble into work hungover, all in the name of being “liberated.” And neither should anyone else. But I’d rather hit the snoozebutton one more time — or, hey, maybe start actual work a little earlier — than apply an extra coat of mascara.
