Ursula Burns, Mary Schapiro Named Among The “10 Most Powerful Moms”

The “Most Powerful Moms of 2011″ list has arrived, courtesy of (who else?) Working Mother magazine. And (hooray!) it’s not all actresses. In fact, most of the 10 honorees are powerful ladies in business.

Six of Working Mother’s 10 nominees (or, in some cases, pairs of nominees) are businesswomen, including Xerox CEO and Chairman Ursula Burns, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chair Melinda Gates, Gilt Groupe co-founders Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis, SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro, BlogHer Founders Lisa Stone and Josy Des Jardrins and Vera Wang. Readers are encouraged to vote for their top pick. (Of course the nominees are up against mordant, working-mom Chancellor Tina Fey so… good luck with that.)

Last year Sheryl Sandberg won the top nod from Working Mother, so that’s why she’s not on the list.

The magazine’s list has already generated some negative feedback, most notably from The Globe and Mail, which called it “a kind of modern-day beauty pageant,” and wondered whether the voting was “a useful exercise for everyday working women.” But we’d have to disagree. There’s a big difference between donning a swimsuit and a sash, and, well, what any of the women I mentioned above do.
