The More You Know

6 Jobs That Will Stress You Out…A Lot

When you watch a movie or a TV show about a character who works for a magazine, the stressful aspect of the job is usually not the focus. The emphasis tends to be on the clothes, the celebrity interviews, and the cool offices. But being a magazine editor is actually really stressful (maybe that’s why Anna Wintour keeps her sunglasses on all the time). According to MSN Careers, being an editor is the number one most stressful job. BRB, going on vacation!

From MSN;

“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of editors is expected to experience little or no change from 2010 to 2020. As online media grow and traditional newsrooms continue to shrink, editors will deal with more pressure and increasing workloads. Plus, working under tight deadlines and being responsible for the accuracy of published content can be stressful.”

I seriously wish that in just one of those romcoms they would show the cute editor character staying at the office til 9 pm eating cold Chinese food. Editor topped MSN’s list of six jobs that may sound really cool but are actually super time consuming and stressful. Here are the others:

Event Coordinator: Planning parties for a living! Oh god, planning parties for a living. Just thinking about it is too much pressure.

Public Relations Manager: PR is another field that glamorized by pop culture (hello, Samantha on Sex and the City.) CareerCast,which put PR at number five on their stressful jobs list last year, said, “Public relations executives are masters of damage control, thus need to be able to think and act quickly under stress. The profession lives in the public eye, and it’s also one of the professions attracting the most college students, which makes landing and keeping a good job that much more difficult.” The median salary, according to CareerCast, is about $58,000. Does it seem worth it?

Real Estate Sales Agent: Well, it is a rough time to work in real estate. The economy is crazy!

High School Teacher: If we learned anything from the film Dangerous Minds, it is that it is really hard to get through to high school kids but it helps if you are Michelle Pfeiffer and use poetry and rap to do it. According to a 2011 CareerBuilder survey, “high school teacher” was named one of the most frightening professions. Even if you are lucky enough to teach in a good school district, you still have to deal with the craziness that is being an adolescent. Imagine being trapped in an episode of Gossip Girl as an adult.

Veterinarian: We all know being a doctor is stressful but imagine if your patient couldn’t communicate with you. Plus, sick puppies are so sad! The Bureau of Labor Statistic notes, “Veterinarians’ work can sometimes be emotionally stressful as they deal with sick animals and the animals’ anxious owners. Also, the workplace can be noisy as the animals make noise when sick or being handled.” Well, now we’re depressed. We’d like someone to put together a cruise for editors, event coordinators, PR managers, realtors, high school teachers and veterinarians, STAT.
