Awesome New Nadia Comaneci Commercial Will Give You Chills [VIDEO]

Normally, we’re not into propping up Visa T.V. ads for the heck of it. But when you’re talking about a commercial with one of the world’s most famous female athletes, featuring a clip of her completing a world-record-setting feat, set to heart-strings-tuggy music and the requisite weighty Morgan Freeman voiceover and… well, how could we not feature this?

Nadia Comaneci was just 14 when she became the first ever to score a perfect 10 in an Olympics gymnastics event. And now, footage of her triumphant achievement during the 1976 Montreal Olympics has been immortalized in this Visa ad. Sure, maybe there’s something a little “wrong” about that. But when ads are this good, how can we complain?

Glad they gave her a 10, but there was a hop…    Now ‘days the scoring system is harder to follow.  A perfect score is more likely to be a 16.1 than a 10, or a perfect score of 10 would be a loss compared to an not-quite-perfect 15.

Nadia was my hero when I was a kid.  Too bad now she’s in a bad marriage and being exploited by her manager.

Under the 1976 scoring rules, gymnasts were allowed that one step or hop on the dismount.  Now, of course, they are not.  The new open-ended scoring system is similar to that for diving in that it has an execution score added to a difficulty score.  This allows the judges to much better separate the very good gymnasts from the terrific gymnasts when it is applied correctly.
