People With “Easy To Pronounce Names” More Likely To Get Promotions

Need something else to stress about? How about this: Your name could be affecting your job performance, according to a new report.
People who have “simple, easy-to-pronounce” names are more likely to get ahead in business, according to a new study from the University of Melbourne and NYU’s Stern School of Business. Of course, what different people consider “easy-to-pronounce” is anyone’s guess.
The report (which will appear in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology) studied 500 first and last names of U.S. lawyers and saw that attorneys with “more pronounceable names” (again, that term seems super debatable) climbed the ranks at their firms more quickly.
The study also saw that politicians are equally affected by the name crunch. In mock ballot studies, a stump speech from someone named “Jane” garnered more votes than one from “Morkljanfllluughh89glunkmar,” just, for example.
Not shockingly, study co-author Dr. Simon Laham suggested that the report illustrates “the subtle biases that shape our choices and judgements about others.” No kidding.
