Mogul Toy of the Day: Nic Cage’s Record-Breaking, $1.3M+ Comic Book
1:19 pm, November 12th | by Amy Tennery
It’s not exactly news that Nicolas Cage has some financial problems. Of course, the latest item he’s put on the market might help matters.
Here’s the dirt: Cage is auctioning off a mint-condition Action Comics no. 1, which includes the first-ever appearance of Superman. So, basically, the Holy Grail for comic book enthusiasts. No surprise then that bidding on the item has already reached $1.3 million — after roughly a day on the market.
And, if bidding continues in this direction, Cage’s comic could demolish the as-of-now record for the most expensive comic book ever sold, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which was (yep) yet another copy of Action Comics no. 1. That sold for $1.5 million last year.
Given that the comic will be on the auction block through November 30, we feel fairly confident that it’ll reach that level in no time.
And, so long as we’re on the subject, it seems that comics books are a ridiculously good investment item. According to THR, Cage bought this particular issue for just $150,000 in 1997. That’s an insane return on investment. And it’s a safe bet that we’ll never see a “comic book crisis.”
