o.b.’s Bizarre Talking Crab Ad Reminds Us Our Tampons Are Destroying The Earth [VIDEO]

With Earth Day around the corner, it’s no surprise that corporate brands are getting in on the celebration. Supporting Earth Day cultivates a nice image, it promotes a good message, and so on. Bottom line, looking like a pro-environment company is kind of like being pro-puppy. There just isn’t a downside.

It’s with this in mind, however, that some corporate Earth Day initiatives can be a little, well, bland. But not o.b. No, no. The notoriously applicator-free tampon company has a very special message for women this Earth Day: Your tampon applicators are killing the environment. In fact, roughly 25,000 tampon applicators wash ashore on U.S. beaches every year, according to o.b.’s incredibly gross statistics. This sounds a little far-fetched (I, personally, have never encountered an unsanitary sanitary product on the beach and I’d think I’d remember something like that), but we’ll take them at their word.

Now, back to this ad. It’s incredibly bizarre. And wonderfully so.

The premise of this new o.b. tampon commercial is… okay, so, there’s a crab, who’s a real estate developer (a crabveloper… ?), and he’s using old tampon applicators that have washed ashore to build an adorable little plastic-and-cardboard condominium. On the beach. Near his crab village. So, the crab doesn’t want women to switch to more environmentally conscious sanitary products because he’s evil (I think?) and wants to keep building by the ocean forever, polluting the environment with the aforementioned 25,000 tampon applicators.

Of all the Earth Day ads that are targeted at women (all five of them, I guess?), can I nominate this one as the best ever? This is so delightfully weird — and, yes, a little gross — I can barely contain myself.

Watch for yourself:

Ha! This is super ridiculous, but I kind of love it.
