You've Got To Be Kidding

Transphobic Ad Asks Viewers To “Spot The Stallions From The Mares”

Remember that cringe-level offensive transphobic tampon ad last month that pitted a “real” woman against a transgendered woman? Well, there’s now another in its (lack of) class.

From Paddy Power, an Irish betting company that regularly releases odds on inane things like Beyonce’s baby’s name (they gave Matthew, Shawn and Shawna the top odds at 4-to-1, in case you were wondering) has just released a new ad. And it’s rather horrific, truth be told.

The T.V. spot starts out with a Facebook user named “Ian” writing that he “Can’t wait to see some beauties at Cheltenham Ladies Day,” (an annual racing festival). Paddy Power is then off to the races (pun kind of intended) from there, with one of the most offensive, degrading ads we’ve seen in a while. A voiceover says:

“We hear you, Ian, and we’re going to make ladies day even more exciting by sending in some beautiful transgendered ladies. Spot the stallions from the mares!”

What a neat, hilarious game.

The commercial then manages to pack quite a punch into the next 15 seconds, by panning in on some individuals and rhetorically ‘guessing’ whether that person is “man” or “woman.” Oh, the face-palming that would occur if only my jaw weren’t on the floor…

The backlash, naturally, has been profound, according to Jezebel, which noted that a Paddy Power rep referred to the ad as “simply a bit of mild-mannered fun.”
