“Old Economy Steve” Meme is Too Real

Hey there fellow millennials…how you holding up? Is there anything I can get you? A glass of warm Red Bull? A Funny GIF? Let me do you this kindness; I know things have been rough as of late: your student loans are making it impossible to eat anything other than various iterations of Ramen, the last twenty-three jobs you applied to didn’t have the decency to let you know that they filled the positions, you’re logging sixty hours a week in your unpaid internships, and on top of all that TIME magazine had the audacity to call you “lazy, entitled narcissists.” It has been hard to maintain a positive attitude — even the new season of Arrested Development did little to free your mind — so many of you have decided to fight back the best way millennials know how: with the Internet.
“Old Economy Steve” is a generation’s response to condescending Baby Boomers, student loans, unemployment, and the escalating cost of living. The meme depicts a young man with ’70s feathered hair and an awkward half-smile encircled by captions that are out-of-touch with millennial frustrations. “Works one minimum wage hour, buys four gallons of gas,” one reads. Another: “I didn’t have a computer at my desk like you kids, had scotch and an ashtray instead.” We’ve included some of our personal favorites below; scroll through and laugh/cry/harumph as necessary. (No judgement.)
