As OWN Tanks, Oprah Takes Over As CEO

Oprah Winfrey’s OWN is struggling as a TV station, and they need a new CEO. Ah, who to choose? Let’s ponder that one for a bit…how about…Oprah?

Indeed, it’s true. Oprah’s making OWN her own. At some point in the Fall, Oprah will take over as OWN’s CEO, insiders told The Wall Street Journal. Oprah will replace Peter Liguori, the COO turned interim CEO who took over when CEO Christina Norman left the company in May. Yikes. We’re not exactly surprised Oprah is having to run the company herself – clearly no one else wants to do it.

And that’s not a surprise either. The station has struggled pretty tremendously. In fact, the WSJ says, OWN’s ratings even fell below those of Discovery Health, the channel it replaced. Apologies to anyone closet Discovery Health fans, but that’s bad.

Now, it feels like Oprah’s just desperately trying to keep this ship afloat – and she seems intent on not losing more people. Along with her CEO news today, she announced that the current presidents of her TV production division, Harpo Studios, will also become presidents of OWN. Also, well, it’s a way to throw all the chips into OWN, and just pray it works out.

Fingers crossed?

Curious if the people “no interest” in OWN is because of her outspoken support of Obama.  I think her downfall was when she turned on woman “who made her Oprah” when she made the comment – “I am a black woman! – and black comes before woman.”  Wow! It seems the Kings in America forget — Kings are made in America not born.  And they are made by those who want to be kings but are happy to anoint someone else they believe can go all the way. Oprah was anointed by the woman of America and she through them under the bus. Now all her good will will do her no good now.  Sad – I always liked Oprah — honestly until I heard that comment.

Oprah honey don’t panic just call your friend Dave Chappell. Then watch what happens. You are way too serious with this venture, lighten up girl.

  • Anonymous

In other news, Oprah has seized the keys to her own car.

  • Anonymous

Serves her right!  She thought that supporting an incompetent, inexperienced presidential candidate just because he was BLACK was more important than those that helped her rise to fame.  She deserves every bit of failure that comes her way.

  • denise

Agreed….all of a sudden she seems out of touch…and not too smart.

  • Mayne

I usually try not to respond to idiots but I have to in this case.  The same failure you wish upon Oprah or anyone else for that matter, will visit you and your household.  But judging bythis comment, it already has because only a failure of a human will wish failure upon someone else, so they can have company.  Your life is pretty sad.  Even if OWN doesn’t work, Oprah has way experienced way more success in her life that one failed project will not erase any of that.

  • Paul

I hate to say this, but Oprah made her fortune on white, middle class women.  She was the first (and only?) black woman to break the barriers those barriers down.  Let’s face it, she would be nowhere near where she is today just with black women (and men) behind her.

When she abandoned Hillary Clinton in 08, she must have realized that she was going to alienate a huge portion of her white following.  White people whom had listened to her rantings about respect, understanding and compassion were dumbfounded when she threw them under the bus to support Obama.  Quite frankly, as one ardent Oprah supporter (prior to 08) said to me :  “When the chips were down, she showed her true colors.”

Oprah became a billionaire on the support of the white women.  And the chickens have come home to roost.

  • Steve Reeves

Wow!  It only took 5 minutes for people to bring Obama into it and start bringing up race!

  • Mayne

I’m trying to understand your comment.  Who anointed Oprah?  Women? If you believe this to be so, how did she throw them under the bus?

  • Anonymous

Yah, because we are SICK and FRIKIN tired of Left wing Morons dictating to us how to live our lives.

  • Flamingrose40

It’s tanking because IT SUCKS!!! I quit watching Oprah years ago when she bashed a woman for her religious beliefs! She is so sanctimonious about her “spirituality”….must pray at the alter of Obeyme…ooops Obama!

  • Richijon1

I can feel the presence of racist tea-bagger cry-babies on this thread.

This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with management. Hence, the quote “she seems intent on not losing more people.”

  • K_taite

Black, white, or indigo it doesn’t matter the point is the network is failing and plenty of things come into play besides race. It really pisses me off when people seem to cant find a legitimate reason someone drops the freaking race card. Grow the the hell up!!!!

  • Bob Uda

Why don’t she ask Obama for help with a bailout.  After all, he owes her.  Also, he should loan one of his superb czars to head OWN and keep him on the administration’s payroll.  These two suggestions would save OWN.  Get my drift?

  • Anonymous

I can see the writings of American hating socialists.

  • Anonymous

You are crazy if you think it has nothing to do with politics.  Her show began to tank right after she came out in support of Obama and refused to allow Palin a forum on her show.  Her audience was made up of WOMEN, not black women or white women or dem women or repub women, but women.  She lost half her fan base when she chose skin color over principles.

  • Arkansas Steve

Oprah’s first mistake (a BIG one) was to use her influence to shove “Hope & Change” down our throats.  She isn’t the first, and likely won’t be the last entertainer to lose their political capital (good will) by attempting to shove their political views at their fans.  I really like Oprah, but she showed ‘extreme immaturity’ in supporting Obama so openly & aggressively.  If her network tanks, that’s fine with me.

  • CarmanK

That’s RICH! The republicans in MI, want to sell off the assets of the state to the powerful and of course have no trouble sending in Emergency Financial Managers to fire the elected officials in Benton Harbor. The Super-thief in chief Rick Scott  is now raiding the FL treasury, enriching himself and friends, all the while depressing voter rights. The repugs in WI disparage workers and then depress wages and want to impoverish the middle class to enrich a few. The republicans in OH and NJ are taking away the rights of women, workers, the elderly and the sick every day. In AZ, republican Jan Brewer is a murderer, she took away the rights of people to live because she needed to pay her privatized prison owners, and in TX they have real DEATH PANELS who decide who will live and die, depending on how much money they have. The repugs in congress have offered up 16 amendments to the constitution since Nov 2010.  You are deceived by the Reagan propaganda machine.  The real intruders and suppressors of FREEDOM and EQUALITY are the republicans who want to solve 21st century problems with 18th century solutions.

  • CarmanK

According to Vargas, Oprah threw women under the bus, when she said she was BLACK first and then a woman!! Black is an integral part of her life experiences. Of course, she is influenced by her cultural background. She is driven to protect women’s rights, to seized the opportunity for equality in the corporate world. She has done well by her celebrity. She has encouraged women to get an education, to enrich their minds by reading and challenged them to think. All, this drive and ambition and persuit of perfection is a part of her culture and her faith. She is woman of stature and she bows to no man. I would say that OPRAH has served all women in the US and around the world. I am hoping she will come up with a TV network that speaks truth to power.

    So you condone racism?

I feel bad for your 4 children, they have a mother full of hate and are destined to follow in her footsteps.

  • CarmanK

Oprah became a success because of her ability to adapt, to convince and through hard work and smarts. She is a role model for women of all colors. And she helped women find their way. I hope she is willing to speak out against these right wing MEN who want to deprive women of their rights to “health care choices”, that an EGG is not a PERSON, that women have a right to equality in the work place as desparaged by the male dominated SCOTUS. We need OPRAH back to lead the challenges. And by the way, Obama is doing the job he was elected to do and Hillary is a phenom in diplomacy. Whoever was elected the republicans would have taken the same irresponsible path the fiscal irresponsibility. They thrive on ignorance and bigotry. They can’t win arguments on merits or truth, so they lie and follow the MURDOGS AND KOCHROACHES where ever they lead. Oprah didn’t abandon WOMEN, she enrich the lives of many, and what bigots are so envious of, she did it with her talent, smarts and understanding of people.

  • http://twitter.com/Darr247 Darr Darr

Oprah needs to abandon the ‘cable only’ format and start adding ‘dot’ transmitters to existing towers in major markets, and feed them OWN’s programming over the internet.  Cheesus…  if ION, TCN, CoolTV, et al, can do it, OWN certainly can.

  • Doris

I wish Opera success with her new project… I have always admired her but do not agree with her politics  but her politics is her business just like it is everybody’ else’s business… I hope after she takes it over she will do alot of the re-runs of the 50′s and 60′s ……………………… Opera! if  you should read this please remember us older people and do some old re-runs in the mornings
Not many other people watch TV that part of the except us oldies and we are at the time that we like remebering the old days… I do believe it would be sucessful…. GOOD LUCK OPERA

She’ll probably go running back to one of the drive-by’s to pollute.

  • Agfa_10

she should sign Barak Obama for c.e.o., she supported him for “ever”, she must trust his ability to turn the U.S. economy around so turning OWN into  profit making corporation should be “cake walk”.
In addition, Barak Obama has access to Billion of Dollars, still unused as U.S. businesses are doing so well, so he should be able to support OWN just  as he does for G.E..
HEY OPRAH’S PROBLEMS ARE OVER, BY VOTING BARAK OBAMA ………….. as C.E.O., while saving the U.S., from failed president

I lost all respect for Oprah when she was asked why she didn’t have Sarah Palin come on her show in 2008.  Her response?  She didn’t want to affect the upcoming Presidential election.  Then why did she have the Obama’s on?  They were on twice that year if I remember right.  That’s when I knew Oprah was just another racist.  A lot of women figured this out at the same time I did, and like it or not, it has damaged her brand which is now the OWN network since she is retired from her own TV show.  She would have had great ratings from a Palin appearance but chose color over everything else.

  • Anonymous

She was just a glorified talk show host, like Mike Douglas, Phil Donahue, etc.  Her edge was the women (and of course she’s black, which caused everyone to swoon over her abilities), and she threw that out to go with the man against Hillary.  It hasn’t been the same since then.

  • Anonymous

This has everything to do with politics and nothing to do with management. Oprah Winfrey brought people together, she gave and was given respect, and proudly succeeded in her endeavors. She then made the mistake of supporting her polar opposite, to the detriment of her audience and this country. Elections do have consequences.

  • CarmanK

Actually, my four children are quite successful in the life endeavors. and I am very proud to say, that my grandson’s friends are white, black and hispanic. They all fit quite well in their families, communities and the country that they serve with distinction.

  • CarmanK

No, quite the contrary, being proud of being black with its rich heritage, is the same as being proud of my IRISH which contributes to my character. It is the Irish in me that is intolerant of injustice. It is the Irish in me, that makes me stand up for the poor and hungry as a result from my Grandmother ‘s stories about the IRISH POTATO FAMINE and her journey to America. I am proud of my Irish and grateful that my ancestors risked their lives to reach American shores.

Thus far the show sucks.  Too much Oprah Behind the Scenes [who cares}, too much of Judd sisters, ditto anger maniac so yesterday Ryan and Tatum O’Neill.  Not  enough Lisa Ling or anything interesting and fresh.

I technologically started this “race” conversation – though honestly my point is not about race at all… it’s about loyalty.  Life gives us an audience and if we manage that audience ( community ) well we will be blessed. Oprah for many many years mastered caring for her audience. She loved them and they loved her. When it came to her political ideas – it would have served her better to have left it alone. But she got drunk on the idea of being a key part of a historic moment. And at that moment … she body checked her audience and became a “different” Oprah. Not a bad, good or better or worst Oprah — just a different Oprah.  And that Oprah attracts a different audience.  Her “name” could be saved if she apologized to her original audience and then retired for a few years – giving the relationship to breath and hopefully heal.  Though onestly I think her time is done.  It’s sad – she provided a great service to woman. It’s really sad.

  • AquariusTV

another racist…I agree. Hope she fall from grace.

  • Gloria

Oprah did many good things but then ruined it for me when she was absolutely a giddy school girl over Obama. An unknown, backed with tons of money from? He was black and that’s all she cared about. Now we are paying for this socialist  man. America is in trouble – no thanks to the Lefties like Oprah.

  • http://www.facebook.com/artmuseums Aladine Vargas

I am NOT white. I would be considered Brown.  Reading through these comments … let me ask those cry “racist”.  Why did Oprah support Obama? His ideas, his smile, his experience?  If she was interested in his ideas — then why not have Palin on in 08 also?  She made it clear — it was skin color.  She was the one who originally set the context around race.  And so I’m not playing the race card — I am commenting on her prefer of race over gender but more important in this case — her refusal to engage these people on character and ideas — but chose skin color instead.  Sad.

  • Anonymous

Racist much? Does it matter the skin color of the posters?

nO MATTER WHAT THE TOPIC IS THESE DAYS IT COULD BE ABOUT APPLE PIE…SOMEHOW IT TURNS INTO raCE AND oBAMA…YOU GUYS ARE SO BORING!!!

  • Skinnytips

I’m not going to waste my time commenting because Everyone comments are so predictable these days…  No one dares to see these outside of themselves.
For instance, If you’re not a BLaCK woman  you wouldn’t understand that society often sees your Color before your Gender–we just conform we didn’t create the rules of the world we just learned to adjust. This is why Oprah said what she said.

  • Guest

We will never be on the same page as far as race is concerned…. The white middle class women who liked Oprah but when she decided to back President Obama turned their backs on her… of course their mindset is she backed the president because he is Black… Could it be she honestly liked his policies? Those same middle class women probably thought Sarah Palin would have made a good VP… hummm, let’s think on that a min. Now one of the reasons ppl didn’t want Pres. Obama in office was because he didn’t have enough time in”service” to represent the U.S. but Sarah Palin had less time in “service” but her supporters didn’t think that was an issue. I like Oprah but I feel if you sell your soul to the devil then when it’s time to pay up you have to be ready… hence her mostly all white staff! I don’t wish her any ill will or wish her downfall!!I honestly hope she can bounce back and believe she can if she offers what an audience wants.

  • Jlll

Oprah got very lucky with her daytime show.  Controlling an entire network – well, that takes far more than luck!

  • Anonymous

Wow, your grandma was alive 150 years ago? The Irish in me thinks you’re full of it.

  • Joyfull40

My my, unbelievable how much racism is running rampant on this thread.  And how nice it is to see nothing has really changed in the good old USA after all. Phoney talking white women and the odd phoney talking white man, who profess to NOT being racist, are showing their true colours.  Hope ya’ll have a lovely day pretending to be loving people in church, this Sunday.

  • LibelFreeZone

Jill wrote:   Controlling an entire network…

It’s not a “network.”  Discovery allowed NOprah to call it Oprah Winfrey Network because the acronym (OWN) works and it sounds so powerful.  She took over the Health CHANNEL.  She replaced a CHANNEL.

  • Joebuck

I think you just commented….Oprah is a snake oil saleswoman who knew how to charm bored women, she is just another celeb-u-tard ready to separated people with too much time on their hands from their $$$.  She told them what they wanted to hear and were willing to foolishly pay for.

  • Ulama

Oprah’s network is actually getting very high ratings on Sunday nights. Give it time. It’s just getting started. Oprah’s hardly even on the network right now

  • Nex

I think it’s the other way around. A network takes luck because you luck into the right combination of shows. Hosting your own show takes talent because she personally had to go out there everyday and be entertaining.

  • Huh

When did her show ever tank? It was the number one talk show in America even during it’s final season. The last episode in may got 16.4 million viewers.

  • Ikytt

You’re delusional. No one in oprah’s audience was annoyed that she endorsed obama. You need to get out of your political bubble and live in the real world.
