NY Sports Star Plaxico Burress Has No Idea Who Michael Bloomberg Is
10:49 am, August 14th | by Hillary Reinsberg
The name “Bloomberg” tends to pop up almost every five minutes doing what we do. Whether it’s reading one of the many news sources or watching the TV station that bears his name, or writing about the companies decorated with the information terminals that he thought up. Or there’s also the fact that he’s the 10th richest guy in America, worth over $18 billion – and also happens to be the mayor of New York City. Despite all that, current New York Jets player and former New York Giants player Plaxico Burress has no idea who Michael Bloomberg is.
Some backstory, for the less sports-oriented: in November 2008, Burress, a Giants player at the time, accidentally shot himself in the leg using an unregistered gun. Burress was sent to jail, with $10,000 bail. New York City Mayor Bloomberg, though, said the $10,000 bail was far too low – and spoke publicly in a press conference against the football player, saying he needed to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. 20 minutes later, the prosecutor raised the bail to $250,000.
And now, back to 2011. Burress, now out of jail and playing for the New York Jets, sat down for an interview with ESPN, which will air Tuesday night. In recounting the aforementioned story, Burress described his reaction to hearing the bail had been raised:
“You know what I said after that? I said, ‘Who’s Mayor Bloomberg?’ Dead serious.”
