Study Finds Female Professors Who Are Married To Fellow Academics Downplay Career

Female professors married to fellow academics are more likely than their spouses to downplay the importance of their careers, a new study claims.

Researchers found that only 20 percent of female professors reported that their career comes before all while half the men surveyed said their career is their number one priority. The Stanford University academics put it this way:

“[H]igher-earning men in academic couples more often privilege their careers whereas higher-earning women more often assign equal value to both careers.”

One of the researchers said that professor couples are “a deep pool of talent that universities cannot afford to overlook,” but they unfortunately have to worry about locking down academic jobs in the same town, so perhaps that’s why female professors are more willing to say their career isn’t their whole life. It wouldn’t be the first time a woman has acted nonchalant about her work for her guy’s sake.
