Reese Witherspoon Made A Great Apology But Is It Too Late For Her Career?

If you are following along with the Reese Witherspoon arrest saga you may have heard that now Reese is back to her old self, showing off those genteel Southern roots we all know and love her for. She issued an apology that was pretty much amazing. It was like end of Walk the Line amazing. But is it too late? Has this already ruined her image.
From her official statement:
“I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said,” Witherspoon said. “It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”
Jenni Maier of Crushable declared this to be the perfect celebrity apology. She wrote:
“We have an acknowledgement that she did something wrong, an explanation for why she did something wrong, a thorough understanding of why what she did was wrong and the word sorry. Take some notes Hollywood, because this is how to stop a scandal dead in its tracks. While most standard celebrities apologies include a denial, an I-did-not-do-it-but-if-I-did-I-would-not-be-wrong clause and a subtle indication that they’ll sue for slander if you write anything more on the topic, Reese Witherspoon did the right thing by just coming out and apologizing.”
But Fox News has already decided she is approaching Amanda Bynes territory. Crisis management expert Ronn Torossian, told FOX411′s Pop Tarts column: “Reese Witherspoon’s arrest is a blight on her brand and something which will have an impact on her career. While she may not face serious criminal charges, in the court of public opinion, the actress who was known as America’s sweetheart can face serious backlash from fans. DUI is an ugly crime. And pulling the Hollywood card is something which will haunt her along with the rest, because it smacks of arrogance and disrespect.”
This is pretty harsh. But have we looked at the positives of this arrest? Could this actually get Reese better parts? Reese is often type cast in good girl roles and since winning her Oscar for Walk the Line, she hasn’t had much box office success. Maybe this will actually help her career.
What could hurt her career is that she came off as a very arrogant celebrity though I think her apology helped clarify that she had had a few. Yes, she does promote that she is a good girl but every good girl is allowed to have a few drinks and fight for her husband (though next time don’t do it with a cop Reese. Do it with Chelsea Handler.) Others agree that this is not the career death sentence for the Oscar winner. And I seriously would prefer this behavior from an actress any day to texting naked pics, crotch shots, shoplifting, slapping, messing up a hotel room and whatever it is the heck Amanda Bynes is doing this week.
“Charged and arrested for disorderly conduct will hardly effect how the public sees her,” said Hollywood-based celebrity life and career strategist, Suzannah Galland. “After all, our sweet little Southern girl is Hollywoodized, and allowed to act out once in a while.”
And hey, if she survived Legally Blond 2 I am pretty sure she can come back from this.
