10 Tips For Recovering From A Scandal According To Reese Witherspoon

It has been a whirlwind two weeks for Reese Witherspoon. She went from America’s Sweetheart, to obstructor of justice (you can watch the disturbing video here in which Reese just starts making up things like being pregnant) to Hollywood diva and then back to America’s Sweetheart (with a dark side.) But I think we can really learn a lot from Reese on how to recover when one makes a mistake in order to preserve your career. If only we all had a crackerjack PR team.
1.Do release a statement right after the incident
Though we were not pleased with her asking the officer if he knew she was this helped to cushion the blow. Who of us haven't regretted our behavior when we were under the influence?
From her official statement:
“I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said,” Witherspoon said. “It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”
2.If you are going to get arrested, do it because you are fighting for your man
If you watch the video of the arrest it is actually pretty sweet to see Reese trying to stand up for her husband (who stayed quiet and just stood there. I am thinking he was the drunker one.) She was worried about her husband and though she just made the situation worse, her heart was in the right place.
3.Do capture America's hearts early in on your career
You know, there are not too many people that could recover from this. Reese is lucky in that she did a lot of great films that made us love her (not lately though.) Reese, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Garner could all get away with an arrest like this. Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes and maybe even Gwyneth Paltrow clearly cannot and could not.
4.Cancel your press tour for your latest film
Reese had to cancel a bunch of interviews for the promotion of her film
Mud. This was a smart move and I don't think it would have helped the already very small film.
5.Do hold your head high
Reese did cancel interviews but she went out in public and looked great and just carried on.
6.Apologize again on a national morning news show and say you know you were being crazy
“I have no idea what I was saying,” she shared on GMA. “That night I saw him arresting my husband, and I panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I said I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant. I said crazy things. I had no idea what I was talking about.”
7.Do make a major point to apologize to the cops
The police report stated that the actress did not follow the officer’s orders, and proceeded to use abusive language.
“I was so disrespectful to him,” Reese said. “I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It’s just unacceptable.”
8.Do admit you had one too many
This made her seem very human. But we do wonder why Reese, the movie star, couldn't have hired a chauffeur? Perhaps celebrities really are just like us.
9.Do remind us that you played one of the best lawyers ever
In her apology Reese said, “I played a lawyer in a movie so many times I think I am a lawyer. And clearly I’m not a lawyer, because I got arrested.” Not the best excuse, but we were reminded she played Elle Woods. Best Lawyer Ever!
10.Do be glad you didn't start your career with bad films like this
Though I guess she wouldn't have gotten to where she was if she had started with drivel like this.
