Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson: Letting Women Vote Was “One Of The Greatest Mistakes America Made”

I count my blessings every day that I didn’t live during a time in which women could not vote. For Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson, who appeared on Sean Hannity’s show last week, those were the good old days and we’ve gone downhill since then. In a recent YouTube video that started making the rounds on the Internet in the aftermath of Peterson’s gig on Hannity, Peterson says women are incapable of handling power and never should have been granted the right to vote.

“My America is gone, it’s unfortunate but it’s over, and short of God intervening, I don’t see any turnaround,” Peterson says during his incoherent speech, which for reasons that will soon become obvious garnered him some funny looks and laughs from the audience:

“One of the primary reasons…is because women are taking over…They’re in high, so-called powerful positions, they’re running companies, they’re making decisions, and not all, not all, not all….[I'm getting] a funny face now…There are some, a few logical women who can make sound decision[s], but most cannot. And the unfortunate thing is they’re in powerful positions…The one thing I know for sure without a doubt [is that] women cannot handle power…It’s not real power anyway. Power that the world give you is not power. It’s all ego-building.”

Upon revisiting the controversy surrounding conservative host Rush Limbaugh’s calling of Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute,” Peterson says, “She didn’t realize she looked like a slut sitting there making that type of confession,” which was nothing more than lobbying for affordable birth control.

Though he’ll give it to us that some females are all right, he says we don’t know how to love:

“No woman says, ‘where’s your shame, woman?’ … [Men] allow women to run wild and screw up everything…You walk up to them with a issue, they freak out right away. They go nuts. They get mad. They get upset, just like that. They have no patience because it’s not in their nature. They don’t have love. They don’t have love…I think that one of the greatest mistakes America made was to allow women the opportunity to vote.”

What year is this again?!

Sorry to play the race card here, but as a black man, it really pisses me off that a fellow black person in America would like to deny another person’s rights. How can he say such a thing? Discrimination is discrimination, whether it is based on sex, race or sexual orientation.  There was a time too when blacks could not vote.

Lastly, the bible is quite sexist. It is not surprising that misogyny comes from some christians

There are many Conservatives who agree with him …

Conservatives are using “Voter IDs” as a means to suppress minority turnout .. since the majority support Dems .. it’s the closet thing they can do other than prohibiting them from voting.

Wonder what they have in store to suppress woman vote.

This is why I hate religion.  Most religions are patriarchal and sexist.  Here  is a same man who was tuaght his church to think without his own personal thought.  This is the same type of talk that helped build a case against us blacks being allowed to vote and intergrate.  This guy is an idiot.

This clown is black in classification but not orientation.  He does not consider himself black. He also believes black people need to be back on the plantation. SMH I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that his slurred speech indicates some type of neurological disorder and that that is what is going on here.

I seriously have to question how using voter IDs surpresses minority turnout? Any minority, no matter the race, sex, or origin, as long as they are here legally and US Citizens can get an ID. Nearly all states even provide them free of charge.

So my question is, what makes it harder for a minority to get a voter ID?

  • Anonymous

I agree with Peterson about how so many (liberal) women seem to have this sense of entitlement these days, especially Sandra Fluke who is not only shamless but full of sh*t. As far as women becoming too powerful, I take issue with that. The world has had many great women leaders, e.g. Indira Ghandi, Golda Meir, and Benazir Bhutto. And as far as how women should not have been given the right to vote, I don’t where this guy’s coming from.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C6VTISVWOSMPSEMO36TZKUCXKU Dante Goodman

Peterson has thanked God for slavery, and also said that Blacks need to be put back on the plantation in order to learn the value of hard work again….this guy is something else. Surprise, surprise, he is a valued contributer to the Sean Hannity show, and Hannity himself is a board member of an organization Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson founded.

Please explain how asking for an I.D to verify that someone is exactly who they say they are is suppressing their right to vote? Is asking for ID when using a credit card infringing on the right to shop? Is asking for an ID to enter a building or airplane violating someone’s right to enter property – such as a federal court house, a hospital, DMV, or enroll in a school, apply for a job – there are very good reasons to verify who people say they are. Let’s face it most of us take for granted that we will have supply an ID at some point, on any given day of the week.

Isn’t the right to vote, in our free society one of the greatest rights we have as Americans? – Isn’t that enough reason to do everything to protect the integrity of the process? or is that what democrats fear?
I have yet to hear a legitimate excuse for this pathetic argument.

  • Originalthinkr

Well, let’s just change one key word here in your tirade, Jesse:

“One of the primary reasons…is because BLACKS are taking over…They’re in high, so-called powerful positions, they’re running companies, they’re making decisions, and not all, not all, not all….[I'm getting] a funny face now…There are some, a few logical BLACKS who can make sound decision[s], but most cannot. And the unfortunate thing is they’re in powerful positions…The one thing I know for sure without a doubt [is that] BLACKS cannot handle power…It’s not real power anyway. Power that the world give you is not power. It’s all ego-building.”

See how easy it is to be demeaned and marginalized, Jesse?  And there are still lots of people out there who make just this sort of substitution.  I don’t know that anyone’s ever made a study of it, or even commented on it in these terms, but one begins to wonder whether there’s a species of slave out there who longs not just to be free, but to be a slave master, himself.

  • Walterskinnerfbi

A conservative playing the asshole card..also shocking

  • SYSPROG

a couple of things.  Poor and black make it much harder to get and PAY FOR a picture ID.  Since the poor are predominately minorities it means they won’t be able to vote.  MOST picture ID is a drivers license which the poor don’t get because they don’t own a car or pay insurance.  Of course, if you’re poor and white you can just use your NRA card…

  • SYSPROG

no that’s NOT what ‘democrats’ fear.  What they FEAR is that the conservatives will continue to erode the RIGHTS in the Constitution that the conservatives pretend to revere while trying to pass amendments to change it.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. The greatest mistake we ever made was letting liberals vote. Gender and race have zero to do with it.

  • Anonymous

There are plenty of legitimate reasons for Rev. Peterson to criticize feminists. However, suffrage isn’t one of them.  And you can criticize Sandra Fluke’s entitlement mentality (is her middle name Julia, by any chance?) without calling her a slut. But as far as women and power are concerned, he’s worried about men slowly losing their masculinity if the number of men in leadership dwindles. More young men than ever are growing up without a father figure at home, and as hard as single mothers may work it’s impossible for a woman to fill that void. While women in positions of power in the workplace help other women some of their male co-workers feel left behind. I disagree with Peterson when he said women shouldn’t have power but he was trying to criticize feminist overreach (to be fair, his rhetoric was way over the top and I anticipate an apology in the near future). In addition, our increasingly PC society and creeping nanny state are criminalizing expressions of masculinity bit by bit, and it’s doing, in some cases, irreversible damage to young men in this country who are being taught it’s wrong to be a boy or man, who are being diagnosed with ADD, autism and other things and are then drugged non-stop!

What do these “poor” souls do when they buy liquor, cigarettes, etc? Do they lack the proof needed? Are they sold these items illegally?

Anyone can get a non-drivers license when an ID is needed.

  • TheRoyalCourtJester

That has to be the flimsiest excuse for anything ever.  Those same people, White, Black, Hispanic etc, can’t pay for a picture ID ?  Maybe they could sell off one of their cell phones or huge-ass TVs.

I guess it’s OK for Unions to use Voter IDs though…just plain silly.

  • EdgeOfRed

Yet they don’t have to PAY for them. States provide free state issued picture IDs.  So again, how is that “harder”.  Did they have to stand in line at the DMV like the rest of us? Doesn’t sound that hard.

Peterson is one of Hannity’s regular guests.
Hannity invited anti-Islam Dutch politician Gert Wilder. He was very sympathetic to Mr. Wilder.
Last night Hannity invited Pamela Gellar, who was one of the inspirations for Andre Brevik (in his memoir), the Norwegian terrorist who killed 70 people.

Fox News does not bring in Walid Shoebat anymore, after he was exposed as a fraud (he established his career as having inside knowledge of terrorism, with lies about being a former Palestinian terrorist). But as Hannity says “let not your heart be troubled”, he made up for that by having “Rev” Jesse lee Peterson on his panel, who is notable for his comments against Islam and Muslims. However, Kirsten Powers started arguing with him for his misogynistic comments toward women. Maybe Kirsten didn’t know that it was Muslim Bash week on Fox (On the Five show, O’Reilly..). Talking Points by O’Reilly referred to Women’s rights in Muslim Countries; Which Muslim Countries O’Reilly ? Turkey (secular) ? Morrocco ? Malaysia (secular) ? etc. Or you like Fox just generalize based on countries like Afghanistan, Egypt and others ?)
Powers couldn’t get Peterson to see the error of his ways..Oh, well..

  • Anonymous

actually hannity is good friends with peterson, he serves on the board of one of peterson’s organizations.

  • Simdak95

Let’s see…young men are growing up without a father?  Why? Because a MAN abandoned them, and really?  Women in positions of power are a threat to masculinity..hmmm…I’m pretty sure a comparison of the # of women in “power” to the # of men in “power” is a highly skewed number leaning toward # of men; so a few men here and there are feeling left behind, well, maybe they should go home and raise their children and develop not only their own self worth, but that of their children – and really?  Wow…nice, no, not nice..pathetic try there.

Everyone has the right to vote, so what are you protecting?
How is asking for an ID for crying out loud violating someone’s rights? They offer FREE ID’s to people it does NOT need to be a drivers license. If they are unemployed they had to show identification to apply for unemployment – right… If they apply for food stamps- ID required, housing -ID required they do not get anywhere in this country without establishing that they exist, minorities are not invisible. Unless of course, they are illegal and like it that way….

  • Michele Gardner

Let me be the “first”. I don’t think women are irrational, I believe women are every bit as smart and competent as men and thus deserve the right to vote, I don’t agree the women harbor evil within them, and I believe men throughout the years have caused just as much chaos and dissary as any woman today. One major example is our current economic downturn. It happened under Bush (a man), made worse by corporations (run by men). Since men have dominated American society for the majority of our history I guess every injustice and downturn could be attributed to men as well!!!! We’ve yet to have a female president and for the larger part of our history women have been prohibited from positions of power. So, who’s to blame for the struggles of the past??? Hows that truth for you?!?!

He runs an organization called BOND, that teaches men how to be better fathers and instils values in young men and women that our public school system refuse to teach these days: character, life skills, entrepreneurship. Jesse Lee Peterson and his organization has saved countless lives and turned many others around. He’s done much more for the black community than Obama could ever brag about. I don’t agree with or condone what he said about women voters but you can’t ignore the fact that he’s helped save countless families from self-destruction. Unfortunately, the negative publicity he’s getting from his remarks will make his job much more difficult.

I think saying voter ID law is a disinfranchiaing minorities is a bit of an over simplification. I agree it’s a piece of the goal, but its about stopping the college kids from voting too. They are a big Obama demographic and may not meet voter ID rules. And, with college kids, it’s not only the no car/no need for a license issue. It’s also that lots of kids go to college out of state, and dont get new in-state drivers licenses.

Though my fundamental beef with the voting ID laws is that it makes it harder for (at least some) people to vote. It’s not like the US has significant problems with fraudulent voting. This, without an urgent need to resolve a major problem, I think we all have to err on the side of avoiding making it harder to vote. Voting is a core value of our democracy and so, much like

Here we go. Another misogynist. Well, wonder what his women congregation thinks about that.  How much longer will he be able to put Rev. in front on his name.  Where the hell did he come from?  He is a disgrace to the African American race.  I suppose he wanted his 15 minutes of fame.  More like 15 minutes of shame.  But he probably has no shame and probably doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

Good try. It’s not a neurological disorder.  He is deranged and under some sort of an illusion.  I wonder how his mother feels about it.  Maybe he didn’t get enough motherly love and doesn’t not any emale love for that matter, so he’s lashing out.  LOL!!

In my state you have to pay for State issued ID.  Another thing that would make it hard is having to get your birth certificate from another state if you are not a native of the state you live in.  The costs of birth certificates vary from state to state.  Then you have to get the ID.

At the rate the Repuglians (spelling intentional) are going, this won’t be a free society if they get their way.  The right to vote is part of the democratic process to which we should have democracy.  However, between plutocracy and the oligarchs they are severly trying to change the dymanics of our democracy as we know it.  I’m all about progress, not regress and this is the path they are trying to put us on. BACK to medieval days, where there were serfs, peasants and the King lived off the backs of the people.  I don’t want to revisit that era.  It’s hard to believe this type of shit is going on in 2012!

As I stated in my earlier post, I wonder how they handled that?  Did any of them leave upon hearing him?  If they didn’t, they are just as backwards as he is.  I guess they want to justify it by being “subservient”.  Could’t be me, but of course, I wouldn’t have been in his camp in the first place.

Could you back up your overgeneralized statement with proof? Serf, peasants? Obamacare is one of the most invasive intrusions into your personal life/care as any legislation, even regulated by the IRS. I am sure you have no problem with that.  Obama Czars- I am sure your have familiarized yourself with all the policies they have passed without senate approval. These anti-business peeps and their agendas are so far left there won’t be an America to rule.  We have no oversite on how much tax $ they spend and all under executive privilege/order – hmmm that sounds like a King.

You still did not answer the question how is protecting the integrity of our right to vote by asking for an ID, infringing on someones rights?

The excuse for these ID’s is voter fraud, which is almost non-existent in America. It is a solution for a non-problem. It is the newest version of the poll tax, which was declared illegal years ago because it made it harder for poor people to vote. I mean, it’s America, right? You wouldn’t want the poor people to have a vote would you? More than 21 million citizens — 11 percent of the population — do not
have government ID cards. Many of them are poor, or elderly, or black
and Hispanic and could have a hard time navigating the bureaucracy to
get a card. That’s why Republicans want to close them out — not to protect the sanctity of the vote. It needs no protection.

    Define “ignorance?”

Moreover, I think, think–there are more caucasians with at least a minimal education (non-ignorant) than non-whites?  Ergo, there IS a monopoly on ignorance, or the inverse, a monopoly in non-ignorance?

We must give the Western/Slavic world its due, the broad mass of humanity within, overcame “ignorance,” ‘per capita’, quicker than other regions of the world?

Also, your logic is curious:  Because men governed the world for 10,000 years and then the Klingons arrive, doesn’t mean merely by the Klingon’s presence the world will be a better place?

In most states… I live in California, you must register to vote. As we all know by now organization like ACORN took advantage by registering 1000′s of fraudulent names and filling out absentee ballots. Without ID how can the SOS determine that those who registered under penalty of perjury to vote are who they say they are? If they took the time to register, then why the big deal to show ID to prove who they are?

The poor people can vote and get an ID card for free or for a small fee. There is no bureaucracy to get a card – you show up, stand in line and bring all the necessary paperwork- to verify who you are! Easy breezy.
If any of these poor, elderly and minority people are taking advantage of medicare, welfare, food stamps, WIC, or any other federal program they have ID it is required.

I listened to the Reverend closely and I could not conclude he had malice in his meaning.  In fact, I thought Peterson was philosophical in his desire and wish that our Nation had not squandered all that was once good, only to be replaced by  varieties of narcissism and selfishness?  Moreover, Peterson was not simply denigrating women, the man was making a point, an earnest point about love of country and the fear that a plurality seek to diminish, or even destroy our Nation?  Or, would you have preferred a good ole rousing, “God damn America?”

Not too long ago, in the scheme of things, blacks were not able to vote.  If he is an example of the blacks, maybe we shouldn’t have let them vote?  Why does race always come up in every argument?  This guy is just stupid.  I don’t think his race has anything to do with it.  Makes you wonder how he was raised.  By the way, there are many more men in politics than women, and look at the problems we have.

To ProObamaAgenda:  I’m sorry, but you are wrong.  Nowhere. does it say we have a “right” to vote.  It is a privilage, not a right.

  • Conservative and Proud of It

Not too long ago, in the scheme of things, blacks were not able to vote.  If this guy is an example of the black race, maybe we shouldn’t have allowed this?  Why does race have to come up so often, anyway?  It’s not really a factor in most things.  I don’t think Jesse is talking this way because he is black.  He is just a stupid human being.  I think if we stop talking about him, he will go away.  Also, if he is on a show like Hannity, just turn it off.

Obama is a bad president, not because he is black, but because he is not qualified to do the job.  We have had other bad presidents who were white, like Carter and Johnson.  I will not vote for Nobama because of what he stands for and how he has done the job, so far.  So many people voted for him because he is black.  What has that got to do with being President of the United States?  You have to be able to do the job properly, no matter what race you are.  How has our country improved since he has been in office?Maybe folks should have to take an IQ test to vote?

If you want an ID card, you can get one.

Why do I need to give you examples of where women acted rationally? Women make up half the world. I’m not going to detail every instance a woman acted rationally. Why would I even need to do that? You would never require this kind of documentation for men. There are competent men and their are competent women. Their are incompetent men and their are incompetent women. No sex solely occupies one characterization.

The point of my original post was to demonstrate that when women make mistakes it somehow an indicator for the whole sex. Yet given that men have ruled this country for the majority of it’s existence wouldn’t mistakes made by men (in the past) serve as a black stain on the entire male sex. However, it doesn’t.

Peterson doesn’t do this. He only holds the mistakes of women into account. That’s a double standard. Yet, people like him wonder why there are so many women’s organizations. If sexism were truly dead we wouldn’t be hearing statements like his. At the very least we would be seeing the same logic applied to both sexes. However, it’s not. So, ironically until men like Peterson stop applying these double standards between the sexes, organizations like N.O.W will continue to exist.

  • Anonymous

    Ms. Gardner,

My comment to you was not so much about substance as it was about procedure.  You made assertions, an argument, hence it is incumbent on you to support that argument by way of facts, examples, reason and logic.  Without a COGENT argument, you’ve simply wasted your time.  (unless, of course your intended audience are Liberals who seldom use reason, preferring instead, emotion)

In conclusion:  ”I believe,” does not constitute an “cogent argument!”

    Mr. Purveyor of Rhetoric

  • Michele Gardner

In this post your premises is correct. However, its unnecessary because in my original response I stated at the beginning that I wasn’t going to detail for you examples of women acting rationally. I stated the reasoning behind that choice in the post. Basically, I felt that you would never require documentation of competence for men. I will not subscribe to a double standard!!! So, I wasn’t going to dignify that request with examples. So ya, I’m well aware that I didn’t provide you with hard facts and examples of women behaving rationally.

In addition, as I stated women comprise half the population I don’t have the time to detail every instance a woman behaved in a way Peterson would consider logical. That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of example. Just as you wouldn’t waste time trying to detail every instance a man made a sound decision. We could be doing that for years!

Instead common sense would tell you that there are sensible and un-sensible women just as there are sensible and un-sensible men. I don’t need examples of men acting sensibly to know that this statement is true. It’s common sense!!!
