Rick Santorum Says He’d Criminally Charge Abortion Providers

The tally of utterly bizarre comments coming out of the Rick Santorum camp this past week or so is not short. There was Santorum’s assertion that women in combat would create problems with their “more unique” emotions. Then there was Santorum campaign supporter Foster Friess’ claim that women should just stick two Bayer aspirin between their knees as birth control.

Yep, it’s been a weird few days.

But an old video of Santorum that’s resurfaced, who, let’s reiterate, is a real person who might actually have a credible shot at clinching a party nomination, might be among the most outrageous.

The 2011 clip, which Buzzfeed dug up, shows Santorum on “Meet The Press.” In it, he claims that abortion-providing doctors should face legal consequences:

“I believe that life begins at conception. And that that life should be guaranteed under the constitution… I would advocate that any doctor that performs an abortion should be criminally charged for doing so.”

This, of course, raises a crucial question — one that Jezebel brought up: if he’d criminally charge abortion doctors, what would he do to doctors who provide birth contol?

Research shows that all four substantive allegations against Santorum are true.

You are for Paul obviously but you are not very clear in your comments.  They are all over the place.  I think you are OVER dramatizing and mis-interpreting what Santorum said BECAUSE YOU ARE FOR PAUL but you are not making a point, can you clarify?  And by the way, I am an independent and have to yet make a decision as to who I will vote for.  All I know is that the Catholic Church is endorsing Santorum and they have a BIG following.

  • Susan Preston

What is YOUR IQ that you speak in such a manner?

  • Marywherring

Santorum “don’t know nothing about birthing babies” to quote Prissy in Gone With The Wind — When he’s able to get pregnant and have children then he will have a right to criticize the abortion issue.  These male politicians who run around ranting an raving on the abortion issue need to give it a rest.  Women who decide to have an abortion will find a way to do so with or without a doctor’s help.  It’s a decision women have been making dating back, I’m sure since the beginning of time.

  • AIiveStiIIKickin

Only Devils would ask someone else to endorse the selfish killing of their own offspring.
You are just projecting your guilt on others…Lambchop.
It’s not in the Constitution but the Declaration of Independence guarantees all to LIFE, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.

This raises a more critical question: what should become of the doctor who, with the blessing of the Santorums, administered life-saving drugs to Karen Santorum that caused the death of their child Gabriel.

To make up for having the right to choose, the Santorum’s slept with their dead baby overnight, and brought it home to their children.

The Santorum’s had an abortion. No don’t you do the same.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6KRU2XBW2DA24T3GPNPUD34QQ4 dougster

Karen Santorum ended her pregnancy, with her husband’s blessing, to save her life. Karen Santorum had an abortion.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6KRU2XBW2DA24T3GPNPUD34QQ4 dougster

uh…Santorum is running for PRESIDENT, of the COUNTRY, not altar boy. ADVOCATING for criminal charges against abortion providers when you are PRESIDENT means introducing a bill to become a LAW, which gets ENFORCED against everyone else. Except his wife.

If this bigot cared anything about human life, he would advocate for greater sex education for teens, to PREVENT unwanted pregnancies. Do you really want a President who no longer has sex with his wife, and wants to tell everyone else to do the same? You want THAT man to have his finger on a nuclear bomb?

  • Anonymous

Rick Santorum keeps melding religion into his speeches. His religion is not everyone religion here in America. Politicians should stay away from religious overtones and controversies, and those who deliberately try to infuse their religion onto others, is stepping way out-of-bounds. Santorum has no idea of what president Obama says or does in any realm, but merely spewing his own distorted views to drag down the president’s aura and prestige. Santorum has no idea at all of how the president thinks. Questioning president Obama’s Christian values is not for Santorum or anyone else’s business. President Obama’s christian values would do nothing to generate jobs in America, just as the current 112th Congress has done to date. Santorum is a politician trying to mix in religious values into our political realm, rather than question the 112th(current) Congress on their inability to generate jobs as they promised in 2010. Questioning Romney’s Olympic leadership in retrospect does nothing to help generate the jobs the TEA party promised back in 2010. Any right-winged politician questioning another’s Christian values is stepping way outside the boundaries of their political realm. America was not started as a bible thumping country and these extremist are taking their church into the depths of politicizing issues. America has numerous religions and no one should question another’s religious background, just because he/she are of another religion. The words state: Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”, not TEA party-ers are the one to run the country, or women are second class citizens, as they won the right to vote and choose their own leadership. Courting the TEA party separates those who would discuss and compromise from confrontational-ist with narrow-minded, narcissistic positions.

That mean old Santorum wants to stop killing babies, who does he think he is?

  • AIiveStiIIKickin

I am certain that he advocates sex-ed for teens but not by liberal pervs in public schools.

He isn’t telling anyone what to do…but he, like all Presidents, would attempt to introduce legislation which would make certain actions illegal.
That’s how it works. It is Congress that holds the balances in check.
The rest of your post is just too ridiculous to comment on.

  • http://twitter.com/EKoh_PA Ed K

The “Catholic Church” is more than just bishops, who cannot speaks for the laity.  And despite what the old right-wing Protestants think, Catholics do not vote the way the priests tell them (and never have).  Very few of our votes have been swayed by this debate, since we ignore the anitiquated ban on contraception we are not going to take the view that no co-pay on contraception is an attack on our religious freedom. So if you really believe that Catholics are going to vote for Santorum over this you are profoundly ignorant and delusional.

Now fundamentalists burning Catholic convents and churches, that was an infringement on our 1st Amendment rights.

  • Tina

Women have the right to birth control and anyone who states they do not is someone who should not be in a position of power over anyone in the country, most especially women.  I fought for women’s rights in the sixties and seventies, and we sure don’t need to go backwards now.  Putting an aspirin between your legs might sound like a joke to some people, but when someone says this, they are not joking.  We have a right to freedom of choice.  I’m afraid when I hear something said like this.  Let’s not go backwards by choosing a President who truly does not believe in equality and freedom for all.

Ron Paul is the only candidate out there on both sides that supports the protection of all freedoms and not just the ones he happens to like. All other candidates and all presidents of past and probably future only support the protection of freedoms that they like at the time. What people don’t seem to understand is that if you try and control someone’s freedoms then eventually the ones you hold dear will be controlled as well. Really everyone gets what they deserve since they’re unwilling to support the protection of all freedoms.

the church is endorsing? and this is common knowledge? is this from the bishop of Rome? Has the devils advocate examined him and has he expressed confidence he is not an agent of/for or the facilitator of/for or Him? an endorsement would be quite a departure from the accepted forms of conduct in these worldly matters, or is this something of the American church considering the latitude given to the princes of the church in these matters in areas of their responsibility.

But then again to me this is of no consequence as i am the master of mine own destiny and make mine own allowances and accommodations with the three.

For me the path of the common good decides and that is President Obama, he satisfies my needs in worldly matters, for others it is and always has been a matter of conscious in the choosing.

voice of the people is represented by our elected leadership in decisions varying greaty with a complexity and nuance far greater and perhaps simpler than is portrayed in the media. It is a team effort operation as best they can . To choose this path attracts the  same cast of characters as any other – never mind. it is is not power vanity or greed – i mow see clear that if you can you must contribute to the best of you ability.

How does one criminally charge someone with a crime for performing a service that the SCOTUS has deemed to be legal?
Because in Santorum’s world, Biblical law supersedes the U.S. Constitution.  Perhaps the abortion doctors should be stoned as well …?

  • Anonymous

His belief that life begins at conception is fundamentally irreconcilable with his support for criminal charges against the abortion provider but not the mother.  What if the mother uses a coat hanger, or RU 486?  Is there anything more outrageous than someone imposing their sloppy, inconsistent, and detrimental beliefs on other people.

  • http://mediamatters.org/ Leedog

Rick, what are you going to charge the doctors with?? Abortion is legal in this country you f*cking idiot!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LR3I4X656U47FEK4XYRP6VHJ5U Marie

How could criminal charges be brought against a doctor that is doing a procedure that is legal?  Rick Santorum is delusional.  He is no better than the dictator we have in office now.

  • Anonymous

So the choice for the GOP is this extreme religious fanatic or the empty suit robot Romney. They are so screwed.

  • Anonymous

I too believe life begins at the moment of conception and that what doctors are doing is wrong.  However, you can’t run for President of the US and espouse those beliefs publicly because you see what you get.   If you are a Republican please reconsider Romney – Santorum is a mess!

  • AIiveStiIIKickin

    I like Newt.
Romney is Obama cast in caucasian

Memo to Santorum (may I call you dipS**T?)  Abortion is legal.  Get off the cross, we need the wood as the saying goes.  Keep your big mouth out of women’s issues. I have heard it said that he believes:  ”life begins at ERECTION.”   This is a woman’s issue and until he gets pregnant, has a period, etc., his opinions are worth NOTHING.

  • Anonymous

Memo:  Keep out of my womb and I’ll keep out of your church.  No, I am not of child-bearing age, but if I were, I’d not let ANYONE tell me what I can and cannot do — especially if is LEGAL!

  • Anonymous

Yes, the above is total fact:  She dated a Pittsburgh doctor who was an abortionist (he delivered  her when she was born).  It was a lengthy relationship.  She could have changed her mind, yes, BUT why is this fact NEVER EVEN brought up and seems to be “kept under wraps.”  GOOGLE it and see for yourself.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ketan-Pattani/100000305045290 Ketan Pattani

My heart is clean.  According to you, you would destroy the life of the girl to satify your procreation views.  I guess there is no difference between you and Santorum.  No point discussing.

  • Anonymous

Perhaps life begins at ERECTION.  How can you decide (Santorum) what a woman should do who has been raped or pregnant with a child of incest?  You would have that woman pregnant for 9 months and deliver a baby she does not want!
He is brainless and has no business talking about women’s choices.

  • Anonymous

    Yes.  Another skeleton (see above).

  • Anonymous

My fondest hope is that someday (ah, when?) will a candidate’s religious beliefs be totally kept out of the campaign — in other countries it is not mentioned.

  • Anonymous

Anyone here check out the VERY INVASIVE process that is being considered in Virginia?  There is a probe put into a woman’s body (pregnant) that tests for the fetal heartbeat.  It is a terrible looking device and must be painful.  AND WHY?

  • Anonymous

An abortion “done early”  has no appearance of a child.  Look up anatomy.  The “tissue” could not live on its own outside the womb.

  • Anonymous

As the old “engineering slogan goes:”  PROTECTION BEFORE ERECTION.

  • Anonymous

I really don’t believe that Santorum wants to be President, he just using this opportunity for free advertisement for a faith healing church he wants to get started,  ”The Church of the Sexually Deviant”.

  • Anonymous

He should be locked up  -  and purged of/from his evil sins!

  • Guest

Nobody is going to ban birth control you fool.  Open your ears.

  • Beth

What’s he going to charge them with?  Practicing a LEGAL procedure?

  • Anonymous

He’s a hypocrite. His own wife aborted a late term fetus.  Personally, I think you would have to be brain damaged to even consider voting for Mr. Frothy.

  • Anonymous

ALL of your posts are ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

Heck, yeah. There’s no shame in abortion. Sometimes it’s the smartest thing to do, and guess what, it’s not your decision to make.  You can squawk all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that abortion is legal, as it ought to be.

  • Anonymous

That guy (I am 99% sure it’s a male) is an idiot.

  • Anonymous

I think it’s just a way to shame and punish women for having a healthy sex life.

  • Anonymous

He only hates abortion when anyone else has one. It was fine for his wife to have a late-term abortion because, well, they are so special!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1630511468 Betty Eyer

Why would you advocate for something that was determined to be unconstitutional 4 decades ago?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1630511468 Betty Eyer

They aren’t offspring until they are born, doofus.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1630511468 Betty Eyer

I know a bunch of catholics who use birth control and think Santorum is a nut case and they usually vote GOP but are not at all sure what they are going to do this year since all the candidates are nuts.  Not worried about that BIG following.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1630511468 Betty Eyer

Ron Paul wants states to have the right to outlaw abortion and he personally things it should be illegal.  He wants Roe v Wade overturned.  I know that you have taken him on like a guru, but you really ought to start actually listening to what he says instead of just hearing what you want to hear. Oh, and he’s also a racist.

  • Anonymous

Let’s face it.  Santorum is so mentally anguished over the fact that his wife lived with a doctor who performed abortions for 6 years.  She was a nurse and then went to law school where she met Santorum.  Just google the name “Tom Allen Santorum” and it will tell you about the relationship and show pictures of her picture with the good doctor in Pittsburgh.

  • Ned Rolfs

I know he’s against abortion and believes that the unborn life should be defended at the state level. Why do you ask?

  • Ned Rolfs

Where is all this coming from? Are you reading something in about abortion that I didn’t say in regards to Ron Paul. Quit making assumptions. My statement suggested that once you take away some freedoms then eventually you’ll end up with all freedoms taken away, even the ones you want to protect.

  • Anonymous

That’s what he has said.  In fact, he said even a raped 12-year old should not have to go through the pain of having an abortion, but should be made to go through 9 months of pregnancy with a baby from the result of the rape.  Go figure.  This guy is insane.

  • shonangreg

I ask because you’re putting Paul forward as one to protect freedoms within the context of the state prohibiting abortions — the state intruding into the doctor’s office. Paul supports the
Sanctity of Life Act. Under Paul’s vision, the states would be free — free to be the tyrants sticking their noses into women’s medical issues.

Paul does stand for a lot of freedom, but he is also willing to let states impose their religious views on its residents.

Its not his place to say what a Woman can and cannot do with her body. If she does not want the baby then that is her choice if she gets an abortion or not, not his. This is not about religion, it is about a females rights to have complete control over her body and her choices and they should not be stolen by some ignorant politician. He will NEVER be put into the situation of a woman who wants to have an abortion and neither will any other male. This is a female issue and should be decided by females themselves, not males.

If he wants to verbally express his religious beliefs then fine with me, But he should not push them upon other people that do not share the same beliefs. Religion should be kept out of politics.

An early abortion is practically painless.  NO CHILD OF RAPE should have to go through a pregnancy and childbirth.  I had one child  – 50 hours of labor — 3 months of recovery.  No, I did not want an abortion, but no child should go through this!  Lynch him.  He is a few cards short of a full deck, as the saying goes.

56Million abortions since Roe vs. Wade.  You are OK with this?

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/Y43H4PNO6BXVAPLNHWIHJKQZWA Gary S

Little Ricky is a tool. last time I checked, abortion is LEGAL in this country.

  • Juli3

Denise_in_georgia is right. Your question to her didn’t even make
    sense.

“Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your
ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.
Remember all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and
attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion,
and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or
    representation.”
    - Abigail Adams

It is like having an appendectomy - in fact a lot less painful.  Who could even think of denying a rape victim the access to the morning after pill?  You were right- someone with a few cards short of a full deck.

  • Anonymous

You can call them whatever you wish, but they are a glob of cells, completely unable to survive outside the woman’s uterus.  If Santorum wants to see if he can carry the glob of cells in his uterus, he is welcome to a transplant.

As someone previously said, some people are a few cards short of a full deck.  Alivestillkickin is one of those.  Don’t criticize others until you have walked in their shoes.

Let me make this clear to all those people who think that abortion shouldn’t be legal.
THERE WILL ALWAYS BE ABORTIONS – legal or illegal.  In fact, the new Virginia law is going to just push abortions to the adjoining states and underground.

There are many students in healthcare – ie. doctors in pre-med, who can very easily begin their own illegal procedures.  Procedures they believe in and will pay their school costs.

Back in the 60′s, that is who did the abortions for the most part.  They believed in what they were doing, they knew what they were doing and they earned tax free money to get the help the women needed.

Someone forgot to tell Rick that abortions are LEGAL.  If you don’t like it try to change it but until you do it is the sworn responsibility of the President to support what is Constitutional.  I am not surprised of the banality that erupts from this mans mouth.

  • guest

You are speaking on the assumption that life begans at conception. That’s not a fact, and I’m ready to accept it as one.

  • http://adingintheuniverse.com/ Emily Merkle

    I accept!

  • Sarah

Until birth control is more readily available and sex ed is more comprehensive, expect that number to keep going up.
