Salon Writer: I Actually Liked Kristen Stewart

“Twilight” star Kristen Stewart was the center of media scrutiny long before she cheated on boyfriend Rob Pattinson and faced many sexist reactions to her indiscretion. When “Twilight” first took off in 2008, people began joking that she’s an expressionless individual. People love to trash her for “not smiling enough” or seeming unappreciative of the opportunities she’s earned, but Salon writer Andrew O’Hehir defied the norm by admitting he actually admires the young Los Angeles native.

“I met Kristen Stewart somewhat unexpectedly. And I really liked her!” the journalist states in a piece titled, “Kristen Stewart: Not just ‘the Twilight’ girl everyone s- – – – on,” continuing, “I mean, she’s a cagey, cautious person; you can feel her sizing you up while she decides whether you’re an idiot or a nutjob and discerns how much she should stick to polite, neutral remarks. You might be like that, too, if you were 22 years old and the highest-paid actress in the history of Hollywood, and if you had seen an ordinary domestic spat with your boyfriend – the sort of thing a whole lot of 22-year-olds go through, if I remember correctly – become an international front-page tabloid story.”

O’Hehir conducted a long-winded interview with the celebrity, who divulged about throwing herself into her characters, being unprepared for the explosive success of “Twilight,” participating in “On the Road,” and growing as an actor, among other things. It seems like the two had a solid give and take about the performer’s career, a nice break from some of the other interviews she’s done and blatant hit pieces on her. The “Kristen Stewart comes across as a cold-hearted bitch” trope got old a long time ago, so it’s pretty awesome to see a male reporter come to her defense in an interview, albeit a little late in the game given that the “Twilight” saga ended this year. Better late than never, right?

I’ve only ever had one criticism of Kristen Stewart and it carried from Twilight over into Snow White, though her performance doesn’t suffer nearly as much in The Cake-Eaters or On the Road (The Messengers was just terrible)…

I really, really, really wish she would close her mouth all the way more often. Christian Bale does the same damn thing in the Batman movies and it drove me nuts.

But, seriously, you cannot possibly blame the Twilight films on Kristen Stewart. EVERYTHING was bad in those movies. RIfftrax turns them into terrific comedies, though.
