Limbaugh Will Be Livid: Sandra Fluke Refuses To Wear Big Wedding Gown For Nuptials

Now what will Rush Limbaugh have to say about that?!

It’s been quite a year for Georgetown University Law student Sandra Fluke, who famously drew the ire of the conservative radio host during February for lobbying for more affordable contraception. He labeled her a “slut” and a “prostitute” for it, and he’ll surely be furious to hear that she does not plan on donning a large wedding dress to her nuptials this year. Here’s what she had to say about the ceremony to the New York Times:

“Well, there will not be a big gown. I’m firmly opposed to very large skirts. And having been hit in the face with a bouquet at a wedding a few years ago, I probably won’t do that part either.”

You said it, sister. Who wants to require the help of friends for bathroom visits, anyway? Besides, wedding traditions can seem totally archaic and creepy, and having recently decided that I will not have anyone walk me down the aisle for my own big day (if and when it happens!), I appreciate her progressive wedding vision.

How long do you think it will take for Limbaugh to argue that she is once again destroying America just by breathing? Oy.

I get the humor directed towards Limbaugh. And I enjoy that part. However, the term progressive implies some end point of idealization that one should work towards. What is the end point of being “progressive” on weddings? That there shouldn’t be any more wedding ceremonies. I at first thought you were writing that part in jest but then really seem to believe in it with further elaboration. I say do what you want for a wedding. I personally could care less of doing the whole ceremony as a whole, but then again it’ll probably depend on who I marry considering I am the male. My only apprehension is your characterization of “wedding dresses” as archaic (sure, they could be) and the progressive vision being one where they aren’t used. Shouldn’t someone be allowed to do what they want without making it seem as if they aren’t “progressing”, and apparently a neanderthal.

LOL…yeah, he’s gonna care.  ::rolls eyes::

Why would he care?  Clearly she shouldn’t be wearing white anyway.

What is more shocking is that Fluke hasn’t demanded the University pay for her attire. Why not? How is that different than the University paying for her birth control? Why not pay for the wedding, too?

Wedding dresses were made white to symbolize purity, and let’s be real here: A lot of women don’t remain abstinent until marriage anymore. So yeah, some of the traditions seem archaic. And IMO it’s a little creepy to see fathers “give away” their daughters. But of course I respect anyone who wants to embrace these traditions. They’re just not for me and some others.

Completely forgot about the white=purity virgin thing. I totally get your point from those characterizations. I just feel uncomfortable phrasing it as progressive (for reasons I stated already) but i guess when comparing to neanderthals such as limbaugh you end up calling it progressive to disavow wedding dresses. Ultimately, I just want more choice and I try to see where multiple choices are. I’ve always felt that’s what feminism is, and of course I’d try to convince a young 20 year old from getting married young, but even having either choice makes me content. Just as long as that choice is there.

And right you are, it is an old trick.  Those who control the media cast THEIR opinions as “progressive.”   And what “progress” has been made?  Illegitimacy rates, divorce rates, personal savings, STD’s, are all up.  Well, that is progress if your goal is to undermine the country….

Gotcha :) And I agree feminism is about having the choice.

Why would you care what Limbaugh thinks about it?

I appreciate her progressive wedding vision.

Funny how the author only replies and comments on threads that she agrees with, or perceives that are non threatening to her views.

I seriously doubt that Rush Limbaugh, a shock jock in Florida really gives two hoots about what Fluke wants to wear at it’s wedding.   He’s all about ratings, and this is not going to garner much in the way of ratings.  Her time has come and gone, she had her 15 seconds.  Limbaugh has been around for years, and will still be  here when noone will remember who Fluke is or was.

Even this story and opening sentence is a NewsHack, trying to ride on  Rush’s coattails more than Fluke’s gown.

As to what she wants to wear at her wedding, hasn’t it always been up to the bride as to the what, where, how, when, and to whom, totally, absolutely, and without any argument?  I imagine this has more to do with the fact that her family budget won’t allow a big lavish wedding, and nothing to do with self styled, self proclaimed “Progressive” Views, but something else indeed.  If she can’t afford condoms on her own, she likely cannot afford an expensive dress.

I only reply to people who want to engage in a good dialogue about the story, not people who just want to fight or preach. I replied to Jason even though he disagreed with me because he had something valuable to add to the thread. I don’t engage with people who just want to cry “news hack.”
