Will Tiffany Maher Be The Least Memorable So You Think You Can Dance Winner Of All Time?
3:30 pm, September 12th | by Sarah Devlin
Part one of the finale for the ninth season of So You Think You Can Dance aired last night, in which finalists Eliana Girard, Cyrus Spencer, Chehon Wespi-Tschopp and Tiffany Maher each gave five performances that will determine their rankings in part two of the finale, which airs next week. All four dancers are immensely talented and certainly deserve their places in the finale. Soooo…why is one of them so much less memorable than the others?
One winner will be chosen for the boys, and one for the girls, so lucky for Tiffany she doesn’t have to compete with the magnetic Cyrus or the brilliant technician Chehon. And she has done very well throughout the competition, even managing to elevate a disco number beyond the total goofiness inherent in the genre. She’s an impressive dancer.
And yet. I couldn’t remember her name until very recently, and none of her performances, disco aside, have been able to stick in my mind. Her fellow finalist Eliana Girard had the benefit of a very memorable partner in Cyrus, and her ballet training gives her a certain sheen of prestige, but on balance she hasn’t done notably better than Tiffany this season. The show’s schedule has been shuffled around a bit to accommodate the summer Olympics, but if that were the root of the problem the other three finalists would be blank slates as well. But it’s just Tiffany — and nevertheless, she’s never been voted into the bottom. Not once. Through the whole competition.
Clearly, I’m missing something. But what? What makes Tiffany Maher memorable? Surely there is someone who can solve this mystery.
