Colbert on OWS: “When They Said Berkeley Was ‘Crunchy,’ I Didn’t Know They Meant the Students’ Rib Cages”
9:38 am, November 11th | by Amy Tennery
Is there any way to find humor in the horrifying footage out of Berkeley this week, which shows police officers violently jabbing OWS protesters with batons? It would seem no — but Stephen Colbert did it, to great effect.
In the footage, U.C. Berkeley students (and Occupy supporters) are heard screaming as police ram them with nightsticks. It is, on the surface, shocking.
So how did Colbert lampoon this? Well, for starters, he ‘applauded’ the mainstream media for not “blowing this out of proportion. In particular, he called out the Associated Press, which reportedly described the action as a “nudging with batons.” Yea… usually people don’t start screaming when you’re “nudging.” Unless I’ve just grossly misunderstood what the word “nudge” means.
