Stephen Colbert’s Moving Tribute to His Late Mother

As we are staunch advocates of showing emotion in the workplace — since, you know, the aligning of emotion with weakness/madness is really just a construction used to undermine and shame women — we have no qualms about sharing Stephen Colbert’s incredibly beautiful and heartfelt tribute to his mother from last night’s Colbert Report. Colbert’s mother, Lorna Tuck Colbert, passed away last week at the age of 92. After a brief hiatus, Colbert opened his first show back with a moving recountingof his mother’s life. “I know that it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long,” he said, fighting back tears. “But the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish, it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut.” Pull down the shades, dim the lights, and break out the tissues because this clip is a doozy.
