Study: Porn Actresses Have Higher Self Esteem Than Other Women

Don’t be so quick to assume that porn stars entered their chosen field as a result of feeling bad about themselves or having negligent family members. Though many assume this about sex workers, a new study in the Journal of Sex Research suggest that porn actresses are just the opposite. The researchers found that the “women have higher self-esteem, a better quality of life and body image, and are more positive, with greater levels of spirituality.”
“Some descriptions of actresses in pornography have included attributes such as drug addiction, homelessness, poverty, desperation and being victims of sexual abuse,” the report states. “Some have made extreme assertions, such as claiming that all women in pornography were sexually abused as children. Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted.”
The academics came to their conclusion after reviewing and comparing data from 177 adult entertainment actresses ages 18-50. On average, the women had a career in the field for 3.5 years and more than one-third of them reported being married or in serious relationships. 44 percent say they’re single, which isn’t so bad after all. Women in this line of work can also earn more annually than their male counterparts, so the next time you want to claim that female porn stars just don’t care about themselves as much as corporate ladies do, know that your argument is flawed.
