Why Are There So Few Women at Cannes This Year?

The Cannes Film Festival opens this Wednesday and so begins the disorienting frenzy of celebrity and lavish red carpets that is awards season in Hollywood. There are twenty-one films being screened in competition this year, from the new Coen brothers movie that inexplicably features Justin “Stinky” Timberlake (#NeverForget) to Ryan Gosling’s highly-anticipated second collaboration with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn.

Lack Of Women At Cannes Is Shameful, But Affirmative Action Is Not The Answer

It’s a shame that not one of the 22 films nominated at this year’s Cannes Film Festival were directed by women. But that doesn’t mean that next year the directors of the festival should go out of their way to pick films just because they were.
