Has there ever been a more universally known pop song than Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”? Probably, but not recently. People of all different walks of life have talked about the catchy tune, some even singing it. Colin Powell and Loretta Sanchez know where it’s at, but not President Barack Obama, who said he had never heard of the song before someone created a mash-up of him and the hit.

Perhaps this is the reason it continues to go strong even though it has been ruined by the media: The singer Carly Rae Jepsen hasn’t actually experienced the teenage rite of passage of giving a person she likes her phone number.
