Nicki Minaj Is A Boss, And So Can You!

I love Nicki Minaj. While I acknowledge that there are legitimate and valuable feminist critiques of the rapper’s visual politics and lyrics, I can’t help but have admiration and respect for a woman who is transcending sexist attitudes, challenging heteronormative structures, and flipping the traditional hip hop script. Also, I just really love a lady who can rock a pattern.

You Guys, I Think There May Be Some Feminism Hidden Away In Nicki Minaj’s Latest Video

Nicki Minaj is one of the more interesting female pop stars working today — she has somehow managed to blend together her rap skills, cartoonish sexuality and pop sensibility to become something I can only describe as “a hip hop fourth wave Barbie Doll.” The video for her new single, “Va Va Voom,” showcases this weird aesthetic blend (though Minaj was unhappy about its release), and we think it’s worth a little closer scrutiny. Sure, the video is completely ridiculous, but can we still do a feminist reading of it? You bet we can.
