Presidential candidate Rick Santorum displayed some poor judgment recently by using foul language in an interview with New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny — but the former Pennsylvania Senator is not backing down on his comment. In fact, only true right-leaning folks hurl obscenities at New York Times scribes, according to Santorum.

First came the attack ads, then came the seriously creepy ads that rob us of quality sleep. This election season, candidates and political figures alike have adopted the unusual habit of releasing disturbing videos that will somehow make us want to vote for or support them. Last week, presidential contender Rick Santorum debuted “Obamaville,” one of the most horrific video ads ever made and seemed to suggest President Barack Obama is the next Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. And now former contender Herman Cain, who hasn’t been relevant for months (was he ever?), has decided to put out a terrifying ad involving a bunny getting shot by a dude with hipster glasses and a creepy little girl schooling us on the tax code.

You know what I really miss? Horror movies from the early 2000s — but thankfully presidential candidate Rick Santorum has filled the thriller void with his new trailer “Obamaville,” a film preview of what the next four years have in store for us if President Barack Obama maintains his seat.

Judging by some of the forced news items on goofy things that have happened on the campaign trail, you’d think the GOP primary race is an award-winning comedy. Many of the candidates have earned their place in “Saturday Night Live” sketches, but here’s the issue with this overload of silliness: The primaries are not funny, they’re actually pretty dull and depressing — even Barbara Bush agrees with that last part — so pretending this has any humor value is as naive as  thinking your 3 a.m. booty call is actually in love with you.

Stalling for another person is tough — and that’s perhaps what led the Harris sisters to say it was “amazing” of presidential contender Rick Santorum not to abort his eighth child as they waited for the delayed politician to arrive at his own campaign event. Hey, people spout unusual things when under pressure or thrown curveballs.

If we’ve learned anything from this rollercoaster of a Republican primary race, it’s that a person’s high school identity determines nothing about an individual’s future success. The three top contenders couldn’t have been more different in their teen years — Mitt Romney was the big man on campus, Newt Gingrich was somewhat of a rebel loner, and Rick Santorum was just a regular sporty dude — yet they’re all eagerly competing for the presidency. Whether you’re an outsider, the golden boy, or just another face in the crowd in high school, you can grow up to run for one of the most powerful positions in the world.

Contraception. And Santorum was displeased by the (completely, entirely, 100-percent accurate) insinuation that he had made contraception a centerpiece issue in his campaign.

You need a sense of humor to survive a presidential campaign, especially if you’re the wife of candidate Rick Santorum, who is unquestionably the easiest target in the entire race, due in large part to his rather unorthodox views on contraception.
