A stunning development this evening out of Apple headquarters: Steve Jobs announced that he was resigning from the top post, after spending several months on medical leave.
Current COO Tim Cook will take the helm, according to the most recent reports. The succession had been expected — the 13-year veteran of the company had long been Jobs’ heir apparent.
“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come,” Jobs said in a resignation statement released today.

Steve Jobs…out at Apple? Apple board members have reportedly begun discussing a replacement for Jobs with a number of executive recruiters, as well as a CEO of a competing high-profile tech company, according to the Wall Street Journal. Jobs, however, says it’s “hogwash.”
The discussions have reportedly been going on since Jobs started an on-and-off medical leave in January — depending on whom you talk to. It seems as though Jobs has not been privy to these chats.

Steve Jobs has his head “in the cloud” — and he’s dreaming big: Yesterday he pitched a circular, futuristic-looking orb rendering of Apple’s proposed new Cupertino campus. Jobs himself made an unexpected showing at a Cupertino City Council meeting on Tuesday where he unveiled the new plans for the campus, which will be situated on 150 acres purchased mostly from Hewlett-Packard and will house around 12,000 Apple workers, according to the AP.
Is this thing hideous or awesome? We couldn’t decide, so we took a brief office poll to gauge first impressions. Our colleagues said it looked like, “a Nuva ring,” “a giant version of Steve Jobs’ ultimate wedding ring” and, of course, “a spaceship.” Frankly, we don’t think it looks anything like a spaceship. Spaceships look like airplanes. A fictional space station, maybe.

Steve Jobs showed up on stage for a few minutes today for one of his iconic Apple Keynotes today, where the company introduced the iCloud as well as new operating systems for the iPad and iPhone. Jobs, who’s been on medical leave, didn’t preside over most of the keynote as he has in the past, just speaking briefly at the introduction, instead letting Apple’s marketing head Phil Schiller do the honors. Schiller did a good job, but it wasn’t the same as the classic Jobs-in-a-black-turtleneck-and-jeans keynotes of yore.
Tech nerds and Apple fanboys…and well, okay, everyone with an iPhone or iPad or iPod…so in other words, everyone, will be drooling at the new features Apple unveiled today.
