Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” has quite an interesting lineup of women, and actress Allison Janney, whose cameo as a depressed, comatose wife in 1999 drama “American Beauty” gives me the chills to this day, wants in on the HBO show.

Well-documented Jane Dough guilty pleasure The Newsroom ended last weekend (R.I.P.!). This was devastating, but luckily the beginning of September (and the end of summer) has served to remind us that many of our beloved fall shows will be returning in just a few short weeks, including a huge slate of guilty pleasure shows that give The Newsroom a run for its money. After ten episodes, we certainly learned a lot about Will McAvoy, the tortured but brilliant former lawyer turned amiable anchor turned primetime firebrand (lest we forget, he is also “an accomplished guitarist who occasionally jams with Leonard Cohen”!!!!!!!) but how did the female characters fare?

In today’s Twitter roundup: Meghan McCain does not want to watch “The Newsroom.” In fact, she’d like everyone to stop talking about it. Now. And she doesn’t need to explain why. “The Newsroom” knows what it did.

Will McAvoy would probably not approve, but I find USA’s new miniseries Political Animals to be much more entertaining television than the ponderous HBO prestige television series that is The Newsroom (although I do enjoy watching and grumbling at the latter very much). Bonus: Political Animals does not endorse the view that all women are dumb yet hyper-articulate bitches! Double bonus: many of the female characters on Political Animals are excellent at their jobs and can also string a sentence together without falling down and/or sending personal emails to everyone they work with. It’s like an alternate universe or something!
