Motherhood: the toughest job you’ll ever love (or is that the Army?). Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday, and we know that for us it’s a time to reflect on how much our mothers were able to do for us, while frequently working full time jobs outside the home.

This is not the best week for Marissa Mayer. After banning working from home at Yahoo, Marissa has now installed a nursery in her office. Normally, this wouldn’t be a big deal — I actually think it’s great that she’s bringing her son to work. However, she’s also making an exception for herself. I don’t think any of the other employees at Yahoo are allowed to have cribs next to their desks.

Katie Holmes didn’t have an official presentation at New York Fashion Week, but her fashion line Holmes & Yang did schedule a private showing of the latest collection for press. However, the blizzard that hit New York on Friday meant early school closings for New York City kids, which includes little Miss Suri Cruise. I’m sure Holmes has a bevy of people on her staff who could have picked up her daughter, but instead she chose to do it herself.

Is a working mom a healthier mom? According to one new report, yes.

A quarter of working mothers say their coworkers “don’t understand” what it takes to balance work and family — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg with a new (and, frankly, kind of depressing) survey on moms with careers.

Is it okay to work all the time as a new mother? It’s an issue no one really wants to tackle, but researchers are finally exploring it. A UC Irvine researcher says she doesn’t see it as being negative.

During some routine Google Image searching this afternoon, we typed in: “working moms.” What did we find? Stock photos would have you believe that working moms spend their days precariously carrying their children around, usually while also typing on a laptop. That seems difficult! And as a result, most of the babies look like they’re about to be dropped.

When we hear about a powerful woman balancing work and family, with a husband who acts as stay-at-home Dad, it’s portrayed as a cure-all. And we rarely get to hear from the men actually doing the child-rearing. For once, we’re hearing about it — and how it isn’t at all easy. Will stay at home Dads be the next to revolt?

Anecdotal evidence may have already proved this one — but a new report from researchers in Dubai shows that many working moms feel the strain between work and family.
