Taylor Swift Shames And Slams Bad Boyfriends In Songs — And I Love It

For better or worse, writers punish those who wrong them with the mighty powers of the pen. Singer Taylor Swift is perhaps the best contemporary example of this, as she has a history of smearing ex-boyfriends in songs, and she explains in a new Marie Claire U.K. interview that she has nothing to be sorry about.
“[M]usic is absolutely everything that I am and everything that I stand for. It’s not my fault if someone gets into a relationship with me and then cheats and I write a song about it,” the 22-year-old told the publication.
Let’s not forget that she’s an equal opportunity ranter. She goes after bullies in addition to terrible former flames. Just take a look at the lyrics to her song, “Mean”:
Someday I’ll be living in a big old city
And all you’re ever gonna be is mean
Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me
And all you’re ever gonna be is meanWhy you gotta be so mean?
You, with your switching sides and your walk-by lies and your humiliation
You, have pointed out my flaws again as if I don’t already see them
I’ll walk with my head down trying to block you out ’cause I’ll never impress you
I just wanna feel okay again
Now, Swift has certainly gotten some flak for the way she gets back at people who slight her, but I see nothing wrong with profiting from it if people everywhere can connect with her heartbreak and find solace in her songs. Just because she happens to be famous and date public figures doesn’t mean she’s not allowed to vocalize her pain after someone has shattered her world.
