The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party will Co-Anchor Weekend Update

Much like your 14-year-old niece who recently entered high school and discovered eyeliner, Saturday Night Live is going through some big changes. Along with adding six new cast members and several new writers, longtime producer Lorne Michaels is also refitting that ol’ SNL mainstay, Weekend Update. Michaels announced in Sunday’s New York Times that sophomore cast member Cecily Strong will join Seth Meyers at the Weekend Update desk when the show returns for its 39th season later this month.
Strong is probably best known for playing the Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party, a character that has regularly visited the Update desk and made us and all the women we know cringe for being “too real”. According to the Times, Michaels’ plan is to initially have Strong co-anchor with Meyers and then gradually take over, “maybe in the first season — but maybe not.” You see, even though Meyers is replacing Jimmy Fallon as Late Night host in February, that doesn’t mean he’s leaving Studio 8H for good.
If possible, Mr. Michaels would like to see Mr. Meyers stay on “Weekend Update” even after he moves to “Late Night,” starting on Feb. 24.
“Seth is a unique case,” Mr. Michaels said, noting that the new late-night show would not have a Friday edition, letting Mr. Meyers potentially drop in and work that day and Saturday on “Update.”
Whether Meyers stays on or leaves for later, host-ier pastures, we’re just glad that a female cast member has been selected to inherit the Update chair. Although the move isn’t unprecedented — never forget the golden age of Amy & Tina ’04 – ’06 — it’s a nice silver lining to show only adding one new female cast member.
