The Mindy Project Recap: The Island Of Misfit Boys
10:30 am, December 12th | by Sarah Devlin
Was anyone else a bit disappointed by last night’s episode of The Mindy Project? There was nothing wrong with it, per se, but there were a couple of developments that bothered me so much they kind of ruined everything else. Let’s get to it: It’s Christmas and snowy in New York, and it’s time for the annual office holiday party. Mindy volunteers to host it at her place because she’s obsessed with Christmas (the spectacular holiday earrings she sports for the episode underscore this point) and the decided less amped up Jeremy and Danny agree to allow it. Danny tries to weasel out of attending but Mindy insists.
The rest of the episode takes place at said Christmas party, in Mindy’s impeccably decorated, gorgeous apartment. Danny not only shows up but brings an elaborately constructed gingerbread house that Morgan immediately starts to destroy (with his mouth). Mindy is psyched because she gets to show off her boyfriend and prove to the office that he is not a figment of her imagination. He enters in slow motion as Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” plays. I love you, Mindy! Unfortunately this is where the episode takes a turn, as Mindy overhears a woman leaving a sexy message for Josh on his cell phone while she’s in her bedroom helping Danny find his coat. Side note: is there a function on the iPhone that lets you play your voicemail messages out loud as they’re being left, answering machine-style? That seemed like a contrivance to me but if it’s not, what a nifty/weird/unnecessary feature!
Mindy is of course devastated that her lovely and devoted boyfriend is cheating, and goes immediately insane, pacing outside barefoot in the snow listening to the message over and over, getting Danny to call the mystery girl back and make up an elaborate lie about being a gay florist who stole Josh’s phone, and finally pulling Josh into a closet to confront him. As it turns out, the situation is even worse than she thought — he’s been dating this girl longer than Mindy, technically making her the Other Woman. She tells him to leave and he does, but not before Morgan convinces him to stay to hear Mindy’s Christmas speech.
She can barely get through it, since it’s all about how happy Josh has made her, and Danny comes to the rescue, summing things up and finishing it for her. At that moment Ellie Kemper comes exploding into the apartment — she’s the girlfriend and she’s there to kick some ass. As much as I love Ellie Kemper and love her friendship in real life with Kaling, I hate the trope of “two women fight each other instead of the guy who cheated” so much that I couldn’t even enjoy when Kemper starts tearing the apartment up, ripping the door off the microwave and using it to smash the gingerbread house.
Mindy declares the party over and goes to her room, and Danny follows to comfort her. He acknowledges the cruddy situation but tells her she’s going to meet a great guy someday (liiiiike him?) and they make a pact to kill each other if they’re still single in five years. LOL, that was perfect. Jeremy rounds up the other office employees to clean up the apartment and switches on the Spanish karaoke machine that Morgan brought, proceeding to crush “La Bamba” and get everyone dancing, even Mindy.
See? Not a bad episode, but R.I.P. Josh! I really didn’t want him to turn out to be a jerk. That and Mindy and Ellie Kemper barely acknowledging him in their argument soured me on the episode. Hopefully when the show comes back I will have recovered.
