Woman’s “Get More Vacation Time By Pretending Daughter Died” Plot Is The Worst Ever

Taking some time off work for a brief vacation is a good thing. Having your child fake death to do so is not.

Yes, this actually happened. Right here in the New York City. A Manhattan school employee named Joan Barnett got an extra week of spring break tacked on in March 2010, when she had one of her daughters call her school and say that her sister had died, when of course, she had not. You read that right — Barnett had one daughter call and fake the death of another daughter. They even faked a death certificate.

All this happened while Barnett and family were vacationing in Costa Rica during the spring break week they had been alloted. The death, they lied, was the result of a heart attack in Costa Rica. All in all, they got an extra week of beach time out of it.

Of course, she got caught, had to plead guilty of forgery charges — and lost her job.

Moral of the story: if you really need more vacation time, just ask for it. Or lie about something a little less severe.
