“Cleaning Lady Vacuum Fail” Video Goes Viral. Why Is This Considered Funny?

Given the fact that it’s Monday and that the rain kicked my rear end on my journey to work this morning, I needed something funny to get my week off to a better start. So I checked out the viral “vacuum fail” YouTube clip that has started circulating online for its comedic value, but wound up angrier than I’d been before playing the video, which features a snickering cameraman filming a maid as she struggles to clean the floor of a store with a faulty vacuum.

Some found the clip to be rather humorous, but it came across to me as an assault on a working woman as well as a violation of her privacy. The woman’s job is hard enough without having to deal with sophomoric spies who view one person’s hardship as comedy material and instant Internet credibility. One YouTube commenter responded to the callous video best with the line: “not funny.. your mom must be proud.” I’m sure.

At least on my connection, the woman’s face wasn’t readily recognizable.  I would have preferred it be blurred out but otherwise I don’t see how this is “mean”.  Part of the humor is all the people standing around who either fail to notice or choose not to mention it to her.  There’s no reason to think she started vacuuming that way (knowing the hose wasn’t attached), and even though the hose would have obviously been much lighter than normal, it was a lightweight vacuum and the hose alone dragging on the carpet does provide “some” resistance, plus if she’s unfamiliar with the machine she may have noticed little weight on the hose but figured the hose was long enough she just wasn’t yet having to drag the vacuum around…   To me it looks like a simple mistake.  If I saw someone vacuuming that way I wouldn’t think at all they were incompetent unless I saw them walk far away from the machine or physically look back at the machine.

True, but that doesn’t make it any less malicious.

what harm is this compared to stuff they show on AFV or other video shows? Besides, the woman looks to be smiling once she found out what happened

Yeah but that doesn’t mean she’d smile knowing it was uploaded onto YouTube.
