Since it is so evident upon meeting me that I am an old soul — an anachronism, if you will — I am often asked which decade I would choose to live in, if given the chance and a DeLorean. The answer is always the same: the 80s. Not for the “Frankie Says Relax” t-shirts or New Coke, the actual cocaine or the chance to meet Caspar W. Weinberger — no, I would love to be trapped and kept in the 1980s for the epic TV miniseries. Without these decadent, transcendent serials, we have become emotionally deflated, like Thorn Birds who flew too close to the sun.
But we will fly once again! IFC has released a trailer for The Spoils of Babylon, a new original miniseries that will tear us down like the Berlin Wall and then build us back up like, um, the Berlin Wall in the ’60s. Is the six-part series a parody? Yes. Is it an adaptation of a fictional best-selling novel by fictional famous author Eric Jonrosh, whose other fictional titles include The Spoils Of Grasping For God and The Spoils Of The Weeping Falcon? Yes! How did you know? Have you been going through my Google Alerts again?! Produced by Funny or Die and co-written by former SNL writers Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele, The Spoils of Babylon looks like it’s going to be the most overwrought, melodramatic series on television. It’s going to be glorious.
The story centers around the escapades of the oil-rich Morehouse family. Kristen Wiig stars as Cynthia Morehouse, a beautiful woman with an ugly secret: she is in love with her adopted brother, Devon (played by Tobey Maguire). The Spoils of Babylon promises to span three generations, “taking viewers from the oil fields of Texas to boardrooms in New York City,” and features appearances from Jessica Alba, Tim Robbins, Val Kimer, and a grown-up Haley Joel Osment. Check out the first trailer below and be sure to tune in for all the sexy, scandalous action starting on Thursday, January 9th at 10 pm.
