This Resourceful Woman Lives In A Shipping Container — And It’s Awesome

Your very own 360-square-foot home for a total of $4,000? Not bad, but it means living in a shipping container.

A woman in California, near broke and sick of paying rent, has inspiringly done what any sensible person in her situation would do: move into a shipping container. The woman, Lulu, said she got the container, which was used to ship items back and forth from China, for free. Then she spent less than $4,000 turning into a surprisingly nice home, all on her own. It has windows, hot water, a lofted room for her daughter, and a working kitchen. As Lulu puts it, in her home country of Argentina, many would consider the house quite nice.

In the video, she explains how she put the whole thing together. From where we’re sitting (a NYC apartment of about the same size), the setup looks pretty nice, doesn’t it?

I think she is a very inspiring individual, it is nice how she is using her wits to take care of her children…good for her!!!  Hope some a-hole California politician doesn’t try to take this away from her!  Hopefully you can keep us updated?

I would like to thank this woman in advance for showing us the future in America.

Well done, Ma’am. Pretty nice scenery, too.

Where does she set it “for free” ?
Hell, even trailer parks charge $300 or more per month for lot rent.

It really didn’t show the roof very well. I would hope she put a real roof over the steel, and if she allowed for eave-to-peak ventilation, it should stay a lot cooler in the summer.

    Very Cool!

Exhibit A as to why America doesn’t need the “brilliant” innovations of the Third World, entirely happy to live in a fricking shipping container or fruit crate. This is called a single unit shanty town and probably squatting on someone else’s land and with stolen electricity and sewage. She can’t compete in America – what a surprise. So she comes up with America-lite otherwise known as Latin America. Now you know why South America is South America.

  • 12voltman1

I’ve seen trailer homes that look worse than that.
You also make a lot of assumptions.

I guess being homeless and living on the street (like many NATIVE BORN Americans) would have been a better option, eh?  A lot of ignorance and hostility towards immigrants from developing countries. It drips from your callous comments. This woman, just needs a chance. It’s obvious she had skills. Hate people like you who look down upon people struggling to survive.

james, don’t be so arrogant.  I have a home large enough for 16 people and would love to live in a space like that.  These containers are being used in beautiful settings all over the world.  I have been encouraging my kids to look into it.  I don’t want them in debt to banks.  They can add on more and more to them.  I worked with one young man who has his plan and is paying for his land.
He has reserved a section for his future bride to design.  A good example he is to some of his friends, drives an old volvo station wagon I gave him, saves his money and is out of debt.

interesting, wonder where she was allowed to have that set up and not need to pay for the spot.

Exhibit B as to why America doesn’t need “hate filled” people like James, spewing venom at a mother doing her best to keep a roof over her childs head.

try that in Wisconsin  in winter   hahahahaha.

Cheers to people making their own path, taking control of their lives. Almost 4 years ago I got out of prison, bought the very bottom of the market, a mold infested wreck, and have rebuilt my home and my life in a hurry. Almost 4 years without a regular job, yet I manage to keep my bills paid.

    I’ve always wanted about 3 or 4 of those,I think they’re cool

Bravo to her!  I admire her “less is more” outlook!

Yes, and the steel will rust-out if not treated and protected. It is a great idea (has been done many times before) and may very well be the only choice for thousands of people all over the world.  In fact, Obama should run on the platform of  “SHIPPING-CONTAINER LIVING ; THE PERFECT STARTER HOME”  Also, as your income grows, you can stack 2 or 3, or , 4 or 5, and be the envy of the neighborhood!  Even Bill Gates doesn’t live in a five story home! I’m being facetious, of course!  I really do think there is something to this idea of re-purposing these containers.  They were originally designed for one way shipping, as U.S. doesn’t ship enough product to China et al, to re-use them for round trips.  WOW, if you did make a house, from a container, you could ship your house to your vacation destination (by rail or sea) and have all the comforts of home and NO AIR FARE for the family…genius I say…genius!

Just wait, some government agency will decide that isn’t a proper place to live and have it torn down!

So, let me understand this.  What you are saying is that immigrants come here from developing countries so they can be homeless?  Wouldn’t they be better off being homeless with their freinds and families back home?

  • kkitt

This is woman is amazing.  Someone needs to hire her or she needs to get a loan and turn this into a business.  Think about it; she’s being “green”, she is a woman who needs a job and she is obviously very smart and very crafty.  Hell, I have a brother in reality tv this would make an awesome reality show.  My only question is where is she parked and what is that costing her?

  • Anonymous

She has obviously been in the US for most of her life — linguistically speaking, she has the accent and syntax and idioms of a near-native speaker, and you generally don’t get that if you move to a foreign country later than puberty.  In other words, she IS home.

  • NiceJames

So South America is South America because of people like her?? She is to be congratulated and admired for her ingenuity and resourcefulness. She prefers to raise her children in a modest way, taking steps to be with them more. She could take steps to be like so many others (maybe you James??) who give their children attention by giving them only money.

James would you prefer to have her and her children living on the streets and begging for money to have something to eat?  It is because of attitudes like yours that we have the problems that this nation is facing. We have people who have been born and raised in this country who do not want to strive for a better life, she is working hard for her children and trying to raise them as good honest people.

My name is James and I am ashamed to have you make unthoughtful, insidious, racist comments when you know nothing else about her. You do know she is a hard worker and a good mother, the children looked happy and well fed, cared for and loved by her. If I had them money I would buy her a second story for her home.

Not exactly. People come to this country to better their lives. Looking down on them because it may not have worked out is what I abhor and find pathetic. Also, being poor in the USA is way way more better than being poor in some third world cesspool. So that argument simply does not work. There are people in the 3rd world who survive on a freaking dollar a day. You heard that right. This woman uses her brain to make do with the little she has. Beats many native born Americans who don’t do anything to help themselves and are dependent entirely on the tax payer safety net to subsidize their living.

Like, I really, like, think this is great, you know? Like, totally worthwhile for those, like, who don’, like,  have a place to live, like it’s very cheap and like very practical. My kids are like, you know, really excited and like they think this is like the best house, like ever. I agree that this, like would be a great answer to like, putting one on a piece of property that you, like, where you would usually would pitch a tent but like, you could have this kind of, like structure. This is like, totally cool.
    Way to like, go!

  • http://twitter.com/granpappymike Mike S

I understand your point of view and you are correct. Being poor in the USA is better than in any other part of the world.  Thank you for setting me in the other direction.

  • Terribooth7

Seems to me that Tee Pees were pretty good for many years, and they didn’t have a lot of space and no windows. I think she is doing well and enjoying what she is doing. Go Girl!!
