Women More Likely Than Men To Get Tattoos
1:45 pm, March 6th | by Rebecca Srulowitz
We’re led to believe from an early age that only burly, motorcycle-riding, death-metal listening manly men get tattoos. Oh, how wrong we were.
According to a stereotype-shattering Oxygen Media poll, more women than men are getting inked these days. And we’re pretty sure that these ladies are not necessarily burly or enjoy listening to death metal.
But what the poll’s findings really highlight are the disparity between peoples’ perceptions and reality. For example, out of those polled, 85 percent said they thought more men sport tattoos than women. That’s pretty interesting considering that in actuality 59 percent of the people who have tattoos are women and only 41 percent are men.
We’re cool with that statistic. More embarrassed with the following however: “68 percent of women say they got a tattoo because it’s beautiful, with hearts and angels being their top choices.” I mean, that definitely shatters the “burly man” stereotype, but still, you’d think that someone getting a tattoo would be a bit… edgier, right?
Even stranger, a large percentage of the respondents said they believe some politicians are hiding ink: 33 percent of those polled suspect that President Obama has some art under his suit, and 46 percent assume Sarah Palin is harboring a secret tattoo in an “undisclosed” location.
But we’d prefer not to think about that.
