Is An Incubator Just For Women In Mobile Too Narrow? No. It’s Perfect.

Over and over again, we hear the refrain: there aren’t enough women in tech startups! And just as often, nothing much is done about it. Finally: someone is doing something. Something smart.
A new accelerator, in other words: an incubator for nascent tech startups, will focus specifically on women. And even more specifically, it’ll focus on women with startups that focus on the mobile space.
The WSJ reports:
Women Innovate Mobile opened its application today to start-ups with a woman founder or co-founder and a product that is related to mobile. The accelerator will offer two to five start-ups free New York office space, mentoring and coaching, access to venture capitalists and other investors in addition to $18,000 in seed funding, $10,000 worth of product development and design support, and $10,000 worth of mobile marketing promotions.
While it’s not the first group to focus on women in tech, the somewhat narrow aim of mobile only seems like a very smart one. Many of the groups that promote women in tech are excessively broad, and without a clear focus, in my opinion, they often fail to achieve much aside from visibility. The specific focus on a sub-industry just might do the trick. And the all-star team of VCs and industry experts won’t hurt.
